'Soul Searching' – Across The Sea – 2017

19 February 2017 - 0 Comments

New Zealand based Singer / Songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Dizzy Height, is kicking off 2017 with a new original 10 track album.

Soul Searching is the best release yet from Dizzy Height since his 4th of July 2014 comeback.

The title track is a tribute to former Beatle, John Lennon, who was shot dead outside his New York apartment in December 1980. The song is written around a dream Dizzy had 6 months before Lennon’s death and although aged just 17 at the time and despite being dismissed by the few people Dizzy told of the dream, it tragically came to pass; an event that shocked the world and robbed a man of peace and immense talent of a future that held much promise.

The music world of the 1980’s had a different culture than that of today, was run by ‘men in suits’ and extremely difficult to break into; A&R men would tell Dizzy ‘its not commercial’ with regards to his music and when Dizzy asked them what was commercial the stock standard answer was often “we don’t know but we will know when it happens”.

Needless to say Soul Searching was lost amongst a pile of demo tapes decades away from the relatively “free creative market” that exists today only to finally be produced and released some 37 years later. That in a nutshell is the true story of the title track to the latest Dizzy Height album; to quote Dizzy Height: “I don’t care if people believe the story of Soul Searching or not, given the small circle of people I told of the “dream” who acknowledged its authenticity at the time; I prefer to enjoy the final track albeit somewhat belated and hopefully inspire people to think about the message within the lyrics.

Moving on from the title track the next 9 tracks have an originality to them which displays a high degree of artistic confidence rather than a set of songs contrived for what can be a very plastic market. Ironically on the subject of “what’s commercial”; Sir Paul McCartney was once faced with the same question on the “South Bank Show “ and simply replied by asking “What’s commercial?… Who’s buying?”…

It has taken two years for Dizzy Height to realise his direction musically and the new album speaks volumes for the autonomous nature of Dizzy’s personality and attitude towards his craft and the journey it is taking him on.

Dizzy Height recently summed things up when he said: “It’s better to walk a lonely road and arrive at the destination you want than to get lost in the crowd and fail to arrive at your desired destination; let alone fail to meet your own artistic and personal goals”.

Dizzy plays all of the instruments on the album and the material weaves a rich musical tapestry as it moves along through various stages of development which provides a strong and diverse set of songs for the listener’s aural perusal.

Soul Searching is a strong and truly original album available worldwide from iTunes, Amazon and Google Play as well as streaming on Spotify, Deezer, Beats and most other platforms…
