Music News - Yami Sounz Summit Returns To Wanaka

After the success of the inaugural music industry summit last year, Lake Wanaka SouNZ Incorporated has confirmed YAMI Sounz Summit will be returning to Wanaka this May. Artists and industry professionals will converge in Wanaka on May 14th & 15th to share their experiences and advice on how to make it in the industry, both financially and musically.
YAMI, which stands for Youth and Adults in the Music Industry, is a weekend of workshops, seminars and showcases. The 2015 summit attracted over 100 participants, aged from ten to 68 years.
Confirmed tutors for the 2016 summit include Laughton Kora, Jon Toogood (Shihad), Anika Moa, Julia Deans, Barnaby Weir, Devin Abrams, Ruby Frost, MC Tali, and Samuel Flynn Scott (The Phoenix Foundation), with more tutors and speakers to be announced. Participants work alongside the tutors during the weekend summit, with some getting the opportunity to perform with their idols at the final night’s public showcase. Last year’s lucky attendees got to share the stage with such Kiwi icons as Dave Dobbyn, TrinityRoots and Anika Moa.
Summit founder and director Lynne Christie confirms they are ‘ecstatic’ with the calibre of tutors already confirmed for the May event. “We’re totally humbled that these inspiring musicians are happy to make their way down to Wanaka to share their musical know-how with the participants.”
Local musician, Isaac Bell, who attended last year’s summit says he’ll be back this year, and is “very, very excited to work alongside such established, prestigious artists”.
Seminars and workshops will be held over the course of two days, with topics ranging from songwriting, stagecraft, touring (overseas and nationally), audio mixing and production, the sync industry, artist and event management, and media and marketing. Christie says a main aim is to help prepare participants for future careers within the music industry, whether as instrumentalists, managers, roadies, producers, soloists - or for “roles which don’t even exist yet”.
The not-for-profit music summit has received continued support from the NZ Music Commission, Air New Zealand, QLDC, Recorded Music NZ, and Lake Wanaka Tourism, ensuring the summit’s welcome place on the region’s cultural calendar.
This year, YAMI is looking to host around 150 people over the weekend. Registrations open February 9th, 2016.
