Spotify rewinds time and reveals the most listened to tracks across the past six decades

17 June 2015 - 0 Comments

Spotify is rewinding time and taking a trip down memory lane by announcing the most listened to songs over the past 50 years, starting with the 1950s and moving through the 2000s. With over 5.5M decade specific playlists on Spotify - 63% being created by men - the 1980s reigns supreme as the top decade among fans. Whitney Houston’s hit song I Wanna Dance With Somebodyproves to be an ageless classic as it is the most streamed song across all decade themed playlists, locally.

Looking back over 50 years globally, the most streamed song across playlists dedicated to the 50s is Eddie Cochran’s Rockabilly track Summertime Blues. Marvin Gaye’s 1966 Motown single I Heard it Through the Grapevinetops the list for the most popular across 60s playlists and Earth, Wind & Fire’s 1971 track September tops the list for 70s playlists.

Music from the 80s is a favourite among users, with over 1.7M playlists created to celebrate sounds from this era.  While Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ tops the list, Toto’s Africa and Whitney Houston’s 1987 single I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) came in a close second and third place respectively.

TLC took the 90s by storm with their 1994 single Waterfalls, followed by Spice Girls’ 1996 track Wannabe and 1997 single Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind.

Ja Rule’s 2001 hit Always On Time was the most streamed song for 2000s playlists, followed closely by Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me and Usher’s 2002 hit single Yeah!

Spotify analysed listening habits among age and gender to determine which decades resonated most in terms of music preferences. Hits from the 90s are the most popular among female listeners and music from the 80s is most popular with men. When it comes to age, music from the 80s is the most relevant decade among users under the age of 19, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-59. Music from the 90s is most popular with users in the 20-29 age range and music from the 60s is most popular amongst users over 60.

Angela Watts, VP, Global Communications at Spotify, said, “From our research we were able to highlight the songs that defined their respective eras, and pinpoint timeless tracks that users continue to enjoy and will play for years to come.”

To help users take the journey across music from the past five decades, Spotify has created Taste Rewind, a special app that reveals the music users would have been listening to if they lived in another decade, based on their current listening habits. The site then delivers a custom playlist from the chosen decade that users can share with their friends. Find it at: https://spotify-tasterewind.com/.

Spotify has created playlists for the top 20 most streamed songs from the 1950s through the 2000s. These playlists can be embedded online using the Spotify Play Button.
