Awards
NZ on Air formally celebrated 25 years at Parliament with about 180 people from the television, radio and music industries and MPs.
They used the opportunity to give out some light-hearted awards to a small number of the many people and businesses who've made a contribution to local content over the 25 years.
The music awards are:
The First Cab Off The Rank Award: presented to Moana & The Moahunters for the first NZ On Air-funded music video – A-E-I-O-U .
The Can’t Get Enough Award: presented to Supergroove who featured on the very first NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc in 1993 and are still making music today.
The Down With The Kids Award: presented to Mike Chunn (CEO of Play It Strange Trust) for his unflagging energy and enthusiasm as a promoter of young musical talent.
The Loaves And Fishes Award: presented to Radio New Zealand for continuing to bear aloft the flame of public broadcasting, walking that formidable tight-rope of being all things to all people.

Music News
Topped 20
It was great to see local music content on commercial radio hit 20.09% in the last week of the 2014 calendar year. That was a four-year high. Our thanks to all the radio programmers for giving local artists airplay.
Making Tracks
NZ on Air are back into Making Tracks after two months off in December and January.
In the first Making Tracks round for the 2015 year there was 115 applications. NZ on Air supported another 20 very cool songs from the likes of Marlon Williams and Ginny Blackmore, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and The Veils. That makes 132 Making Tracks songs so far this funding year.
New Tracks
The Kiwi Hit Disc is no more. It is being rebranded as New Tracks starting in April.
New Tracks will be a 28-track monthly compilation of new radio-ready releases by New Zealand artists – like the Kiwi Hit Disc – but it will be primarily a digital delivery service via the new http://www.newtracks.co.nz/ site.
There will still be a disc version for a while but only a small number will be produced a smaller number as hard copies are phased out.
Radio stations and other registered music media users who used to get the Kiwi Hit Disc in the mail can now log in at http://www.newtracks.co.nz/ to access the latest monthly release (plus the previous two months’ compilations) and will be able to download broadcast-quality copies of the songs. After three months the compilations will be stored as mp3 listening copies in the back catalogue store on the site.
The Kiwi Hit Disc has a proud 180-volume 22-year history. The first Kiwi Hit Disc was produced in 1993 and since then, we have delivered nearly 5,000 of the best New Zealand songs to every radio station in the land, from the biggest national networks to schoolyard radio stations.
Radio and the online world
NZ on Air led a workshop with the first of their alt radio partners RDU in Christchurch on 13 March. They looked at a range of different platforms available to help RDU build their online audience and how they can improve and build on their current social media strategy.
