Music News - Dreams Lie Deeper - on TV Tonight

19 November 2014 - 0 Comments

Dreams Lie Deeper is the story of New Zealand musical icon Dave Dobbyn as he embarks on a very personal journey to create a new song in memory of the miners of Pike River.

On November 19th 2010, twenty-nine miners lost their lives after an explosion in the Pike River Mine near Greymouth. The country collectively held its breath as rescue, and then salvage operations, began.

Their bodies have never been recovered.

Earlier this year Wellington’s renowned Orpheus Choir approached Dave about composing a piece of music to be performed at a one off concert at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre in May.

Rising to the creative and emotional challenge, Dreams Lie Deeper follows Dave as he heads to Greymouth to connect with the Pike River families and hear their personal stories for himself.

Following a trip to the mine portal itself and inspired by the families’ love and strength in the face of such tragedy, Dave heads back to his Auckland studio to commence the daunting task of writing the eight-minute piece.

The result is This Love – an epic and moving musical tribute featuring Dave alongside the 160 strong Orpheus choir shot in front of a capacity crowd including members of the Pike River families.

Beautifully filmed with unique and intimate performances of Dave’s most loved songs throughout and culminating in an extraordinary live event, Dreams Lie Deeper is a one-hour special that is event viewing for all New Zealanders.

I wrote this song as it gave me a purpose, a part to play. But the song belongs to the families now; it’s theirs, and I hope it gives them some comfort and hope” Dave Dobbyn

“It’s like he really understood where we were coming from, what we are fighting for and what we have been going through” Melissa Byrne (partner of Sam Mackie)

“Dreams Lie Deeper is one hell of a documentary. Raw, touching and blessedly unsentimental…” Grant Smithies – Sunday Star Times
