Music News - Six60 tops modernised charts

Six60 tops modernised charts

08 November 2014 - 0 Comments

Dunedin-formed band Six60 has claimed the #1 spot on the Recorded Music NZ Official Top 40 Singles Chart. They also nab the top spot on the NZ Artist Singles Chart. Both charts were released today and as of today, officially take into account on demand audio streaming data as well as sales.

Eli Paewai, Chris Mac, Ji Fraser, Marlon Gerbes and Matiu Walters – who make up Six60 – take the top spots for their new single Special. The group is the second local act to hit #1 this year and the second to take the title in the first week of a single’s release.

Recorded Music NZ CEO Damian Vaughan is thrilled to have a local act claim both top spots in such an important week for the charts.

“Having a Kiwi act top both the Official Top 40 Singles Chart and the NZ Artist Singles Chart in the first week streaming being included really shows the popularity of our local acts,” Vaughan says.

“Streaming has increasingly become an important method of music consumption in NZ; in fact on average Kiwis stream more than three million tracks a day. With all the music available out there, it’s great to see that Kiwis are choosing to listen to local talent through all mediums.”

The move to include streaming data in the official singles charts follows the lead of the UK, and some European, charts. Recorded Music NZ has developed an audio conversion rate reflective of local market conditions and based on an algorithm used in multiple territories around the world.

Only streaming where the consumer actively chooses to listen to a specific tracks counted towards the chart as this reflects active demand.

About The Chart: The Chart is produced by Recorded Music New Zealand from statistics gathered from data collection agency RadioScope.  Effective 7 November 2014 the Chart contributors are: Amplifier, Bandit.fm, Google Play, iTunes, JBHiFi, Manna Music, Marbecks, MightyApe, MyMusic Taupo, Real Groovy, Rough Peel, Slowboat, Spotify, Southbound, The Warehouse, Vinyl Countdown, XBox Music.
