Katie Thompson makes it third time lucky on the May Wildcard Chart

03 June 2014 - 0 Comments

NZ Music Month 2014 can be officially remembered as the month that country conquered philosophical hip-hop on http://www.theaudience.co.nz's/ Wildcard Funding Chart. The May chart saw two massive runs from @peace and Katie Thompson, but in the end, it was the latter who managed to claim top spot with her song, Leave Your Hat On, claiming the $10,000 Wildcard funding grant from NZ on Air. Thompson managed to call on the support of all her friends, family, and fans to come out triumphant over one of the most sought after rap groups in the country. While @peace‟s spaced-out jam, Amor Fati, has garnered a heap of attention, in the end it was just not enough to beat the musical force that is Katie Thompson.

Speaking to theaudience.co.nz after her win, Thompson said she almost didn‟t take the chance to enter. “To be honest it was a tough decision to enter for the 3rd time. After having the song missing out on Making Tracks funding twice I still felt it deserved a music video, so I thought, "one last go." Once she made the decision to go for it, Thompson says she received tons of positive feedback, and is “stoked” that she gave it a shot.

“Having the funding from NZ On Air and theaudience.co.nz will mean I will be able to finish the single to a high standard and make the music video it deserves,” says Thompson. “Being a full time independent musician tends to mean you don't have the extra cash for videos so I can't wait to get stuck in and make one.”

Thompson also offered some words for her supporters throughout the month: Massive thanks to friends & family who have put up with my constant emails & messages to votes. Thank you to everyone who stood up for me and made this possible.”

Congratulations once again to Katie Thompson for winning the May Wildcard Chart! Her ode to ending one night stands, Leave Your Hat On, is still available on theaudience.co.nz here.

Katie joins the likes of Mark Vanilau, Watercolours, Louie Knuxx and PNC as a winner of the Wildcard Chart, and no doubt she has a huge future ahead of her.

So ends NZ Music Month, and the end of theaudience.co.nz's 2nd year. Thank you to all our supporters who have helped us over the past 2 years, thank you to all the artists who have and continue to feature their music on the website, and of course a big thanks to NZ On Air.

Here's to turning 3, the end of temper tantrums, and learning to dress ourselves properly.
