Whaia Te Maramatanga Album Release And NZ Tour

06 March 2014 - 0 Comments

Prepare to hear the next generation of modern Maori music. Rob Thorne will be touring live performances of his debut Rattle taonga puoro (traditional Maori musical instruments) album, Whaia Te Maramatanga, around Aotearoa New Zealand until mid May 2014.

The tour started with a free event in Wellington on the 28th of February, hosted by Rattle VUP for their first album release since publisher Victoria University Press bought Rattle last year.

Rattle Producer, Steve Garden, says “Rob's unique style combines traditional indigenous instruments and modern looping technology with explorations of pulseless music and sonic healing. His music is new and original in the evolving journey of te taonga puoro. Rattle is delighted to share this fine album with the rest of the world.“

Rob Thorne (Ngati Tumutumu) is happy with the way Whaia Te Maramatanga weaves together many of his life’s paths and passions as a musician, social anthropologist, a Maori and healing practitioner.

“With so many layers of feeling and meaning, the listener can choose how deeply they explore the music” Rob says. “It affects people in different ways, and I have noticed this in live audiences. Some are calmed, becoming very relaxed and even falling asleep, while others key into a more intense inner journey or spiritual experience.”

“Ancient magical knowledge, across many cultures, recognises that purposeful thought has the power to change people’s worlds when coupled with sound.” says Rob. “The album is breath based and embedded with layers of purposeful intention. I believe sound is able to carry meaning, and that breath is the vehicle upon which consciousness rides. The rhythmic layer of breath that underpins the whole album becomes subliminal to the listener, encouraging a trance state that invites them into a deeper inner realm.”
