Flip Grater announces new album and NZ tour

26 February 2014 - 0 Comments

After almost four years on the road and many weeks in a smoke-filled studio in Paris, Flip Grater’s beautifully crafted Pigalle set to be released on April 4 in New Zealand.

Pigalle is the result of a song-writing journey that took Flip house-sitting across NZ, to colourful Argentina for Carnival, to the bright lights of LA to the warm shores of Italy. Her final destination was romantic Paris, and this is where she lived alone and penniless for a year, trying to make a new band and enough money to record her next album.

“I figured, why be a poor musician in NZ when I could be an starving musician in Paris? At least that had a romantic air to it!” Flip

The album is named after the area of Paris where Flip recorded it at the famous Studio Pigalle - one of the oldest studios in Paris. Its’ situation in the heart of Pigalle, surrounded by brothels and guitar shops and a few steps away from the Moulin Rouge was the perfect setting to record this gritty and honest album. The area has inspired many of France’s finest musicians and artists, from Serge Gainsbourg (who recorded at the same studio) to Edith Piaf (who was famously discovered on the streets of Pigalle) to painters who lived in the area such as Picasso and Dali.

Pigalle is Flip Grater’s fourth full-length album, following on from 2006’s Cage For A Song, 2008’s Be All And End All and 2010’s VNZMA Folk Album Of The Year Finalist - While I’m Awake I’m At War.

“Magnifique!” – Les Inrocks, France
“Her music is special” – Grant Smithies
“Pay attention” – Cheese on Toast

Pigalle retains Flip’s characteristic simplicity and intimacy but it also full of the kind of self-reflection and nostalgia one lives through when travelling alone for long periods. The album includes 2 songs co-written by Flip’s friends Geoff Maddock (ex Goldenhorse) and Herve Peroncini (of Italian band, The Peawees), a duet with Nicolas Ker (Poni Hoax) and features a band of talented French musicians including popular French artist Babx.

Pigalle is a dark and graceful journey that is truly Flip Grater’s most outstanding achievement to date.
