KARLMARX
THE KARLMARX PROJECT

Electronic & Physical Release date: Saturday 16 April 2011
Release Party: Friday 6 May, Ponsonby Social Club
Soft Release: Saturday 16 April, Conch

Production duo and brothers, Isaac Aesili and Mark McNeill, are intergalactic maestros, “Karlmarx”. Their debut album, The Karlmarx Project, confounds the space and time continuum as it offers up an instrumental soundtrack for a retrospective science fiction movie that was never made.

Although Isaac is based in Auckland and Mark in Christchurch, the two joined forces and collaborated, combining their different tastes as an experiment to discover what the outcome would be.

The result transports the listener to a new realm. Vintage synth driven tracks are packed with sonic explosions while synthetic soundscapes rub shoulders with hypnotic and sometimes minimalistic, glitch-laden grooves.

A truly futuristic imagining with a nostalgictwist, The Karlmarx Project channels an arsenal of elements including electronica, techno, synthpop, industrial, future soul and instrumental hip hop to arrive at a completely new and unexpected destination.

Having released their fist single “Mists” last year, Karlmarx has already been receiving international radio support from the likes of Giles Peterson,Benji B (BBC 1Xtra) and Lefto (Brownswood) and have already been signed to German label, Melting Pot Music. This has led to "Mists“ inclusion on the Brownswood compilation Lefto & Simbad present Worldwide Family Vol.1.

Their next single will be a triple bill of contrasts – “The Conversation” a playfully sampled, deconstructed audio narrative. “Ares” is an erratic, high tech, short-circuiting manifest, which features reverberating horns and conjures the image of abrass band suspended in outer space. Last single “Wakatipu” is an undulating, refined affair, which delicately combines organic rhythms and cerebral beats.

Growing up in a large family, Mark and Isaac were exposed to a variety of music – from Jazz and Classical greats to modern pop culture icons such as Prince and Vangelis. This eclectic mix impacted on both, sending Mark on an Industrial and Synth-Pop dominated route and leading Isaac to a musical spectrum dashed with variants including Future Soul and Electronica.

Mark is a producer and sound engineer who regularly makes his own music. He was initially the studio engineer for The Shocking Pinks who are now signed to DFA Records (US).

Isaac is a prolific musician, producer and DJ who was a member of Opensouls and Solaa and has leant his in-demand talents of trumpet, vocals and percussion to a host of bands including Eru Dangerspiel and The Recloose Live Band. 2009 saw the release of his first solo album, Eye See.

The hybrid talent of Mark McNeill and Isaac Aesili is Karlmarx. Journey into the future with them and their hypnotic, synthed out, space grooves.

Karlmarx is receiving an electronic release via iTunes on Sat 16 April.

To coincide with Independent Record Store Day, a limited edition physical release of 75 CDs will also be released on Saturday 16 April as the first of LOOP’s “Limited Edition Release” range (see next page for more info). They will be available exclusively at Conch and LOOPShop. To celebrate Independent Record Store Day and highlight the release of The Karlmarx Project, Isaac will be performing as Karlmarx in-store at Conch the same day (this Saturday).

TheKarlmarx Project will also be released worldwide on vinyl, Friday 3 June.
