Music News - NZMiC announces: The Annual Dunedin Recording Award

The New Zealand Music Industry Centre (NZMiC) collaboration between the University of Otago Music Department and local music business Dunedinmusic.com Ltd are delighted to announce the establishment of The Dunedin Recording Award.
NZMiC has identified and created an opportunity for established NZ recording artists that have significantly contributed to thriving NZ cultural identity to be recognised with a substantial award of 7 days recording in Dunedin.
This ANNUAL AWARD comprises 7 days of studio recording time utilising the state of the art SSL digital console located in the heritage main studio located at the NZMiC Albany Street Studio complex.
The inaugural recipients of this award are: The Clean.
The Clean are an influential Indie rock band that formed in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1978. Formed by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour and Peter Gutteridge, the band soon added bassist Robert Scott. The band's auspicious 1981 debut single "Tally Ho!" was the second release on Roger Shepherd's Flying Nun label. Featuring a chugging rhythm and instantly memorable descending Jansen kepyboard line, "Tally Ho!" reached number 19 on the New Zealand Singles Charts, giving the fledgling label its first hit. A follow-up track on the band's Great Sounds Great EP titled "Beatnik" also achieved success, as did their second single, "Getting Older".
Since reforming in the late 80's and recording the Rough Trade LP Vehicle they have made numerous LPs and toured the world many times.
In June 2008 a live album recorded during the bands 2007 New Zealand tour was released in New Zealand on Arch Hill Records entitled "Mashed". A new studio album titled Mister Pop was released in 2009 on Arch Hill, and in the United States on the Merge label.
In 2010, The Clean played their first European dates in more than 20 years; supporting the cult US band Pavement at Brixton Academy on May 10. They are also played at the Pavement curated All Tomorrows Parties festival.
In late February 2011 The Clean enter the Albany Street studios to record as inaugrual recipients of the Dunedin Recording Award.

”This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the creative talents of contemporary musicians and work with state-of-the-art equipment. The outcomes will help consolidate Dunedin as a centre for recording music and promoting the New Zealand music industry.”
NZMiC will be calling for applications for the 2012 award in May this year.
