Music News - Red & Black Quake Relief Concert in Wanaka

28 February 2011 - 0 Comments

Along with the rest of the nation, Wanaka is reeling hugely after the devastating earthquake on February 22. Canterbury has incredibly strong links with the Central Otago region, and members of Lake Wanaka SouNZ Inc, along with members of the community have banded together in an effort to raise funds for the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal.

Plans are underway for a concert to be held at Lake Wanaka Centre on April 2nd, featuring musicians from Wanaka, Otago and Canterbury. It will run for 10 hours, feature 10 acts, and raise $10 000 for Red Cross.

The group of locals is committed to organizing an event that will contribute financially towards the rebuilding of the families, of the suburbs, and of a city that has immense connections for all in the area.

Lake Wanaka SouNZ Inc, which runs Sounz Forza Music Workshops and the biennial Rippon Festival, has been running since 1997 and is registered with the Charities Commission. Since 2000, the Incorporated Society has donated over $40 000 to the local region, as well as the Samoan Tsunami Appeal ($4500 in 2009) and last year’s Canterbury Earthquake Appeal ($1500 in 2010).

Lynne Christie, Director of Lake Wanaka SouNZ Inc believes the target of $10 000 is a realistic goal and warmly invites “every member of the community and visitors to the town to support the event in whatever way they can..” Christie adds that the support of local council, Police, contractors, volunteer workers, musicians and Wanaka businesses has significantly helped in raising the chances to meet the 5-digit target.

The Red & Black Quake Relief Concert, scheduled for Saturday 2nd April in the Lake Wanaka Centre runs from 2pm until midnight, allowing Wanaka locals and visitors to choose a time that suits them to pop in and support the appeal. Spokesperson and initiator, Jenn Shelton, comments that the concert “covers every musical genre from acoustic folk to country, and from reggae to rock.”

Ms Shelton, a Wanaka local and the recent winner of the New Year’s Eve TVNZ Talent Contest, will be performing at the fundraiser, along with local talents Maenad, Hound Lounge, Mt Aspiring College bands and Cairo Knife Fight from Christchurch. Final acts are to be confirmed over the next few days.
