International and Industry action

Congratulations to the APRA Silver Scroll award winners - James Milne & Luke Buda for the Lawrence Arabia song ‘Apple Pie Bed’. “Beautiful Pop music with an edge, song writing genius, Apple Pie Bed is a classic’’ says NZ Director of Operations Ant Healy. The Award is decided by APRA Members themselves, New Zealand’s songwriters and composers. Congratulations also to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame Induction: Rattle label artists Hirini Melbourne - Maori composer, music educator/author and Richard Nunns - one of New Zealand’s most remarkable musicians. Through a collaboration lasting over 20 years these two friends went about the gentle re-awakening of the traditional Maori instruments that had been lying silent in museums for generations. Without their commitment, patience and hard work which combined artistic ability and dedicated research, these instruments would still be silent, and we would not be accustomed to hearing these instruments in kapa haka, in the background of radio or television programmes, nor in contemporary music.

The other winners on the night were: The SOUNZ Contemporary Award winner: recognising creative excellence by a classical composer: Ross Harris with ‘Symphony III'. The APRA Maioha Award: celebrating contemporary Maori music: Rewi Spraggon & Riki Bennett (Te Aratoi) with ‘Tapapakanga'. The Most Performed Work in New Zealand: Jeremy Redmore, Simon Oscroft, Matthew Warman, Aidan Bartlett & Nick Campbell (Midnight Youth) with ‘The Letter' and the Most Performed Work Overseas: Neil Finn with ‘Don't Dream It's Over'.

APRA/AMCOS are also pleased to report on a strong 2008-2009 financial year. Both APRA and AMCOS made royalty distributions to members and affiliated societies which were approximately 10% higher than for the preceding year. In APRA’s case, royalty payments exceeded $144 million, while for AMCOS, they were just short of $46 million. As a percentage of gross revenue for the year, APRA’s distributions exceeded 90% of collections, while AMCOS’s exceeded 92%. These increases reflected growth in total licence fees collected – both domestically and internationally – as well as faster distributions and faster processing of foreign receipts. Total licence fees collected by APRA grew by almost 6% to $156m. This figure is comprised of $135.9 million in licence fees collected in Australia/NZ (an increase of 4.6% on the preceding year) and $20.5 million received from affiliated collecting societies around the world (an increase of 14%). Virtually all of AMCOS’s revenue was derived from licensees in Australia and NZ.

In relation to APRA, almost every revenue pool increased during the year – most significantly in the areas of public performance of recorded music and subscription television. The principal exception was radio broadcasting, where licensees suffered a downturn in advertising revenue during the year. In the case of AMCOS, growth was largely driven by the increased revenue from digital downloads, which more than offset the decline in royalties from physical product ie, CDs, DVDs and other physical carriers.

The 2009 Telecom Mobile Music Awards were announced on the 23rd of September at a function at the Long Room in Auckland. Congratulations to Tiki Taane who took home the award for Highest Selling Ringtone and Caller Tune (NZ) with his chart-topping track Always On My Mind and the Most Popular Artist Ringtone & Caller Tune (NZ). The award for Highest Selling NZ Digital Single went to Smashproof featuring Gin Wigmore for their legendary track Brother and Smashproof picked up the Most Popular Digital Single Artist (NZ) as well.

Creative New Zealand is currently running a public consultation process prior to developing a new strategic plan. Creative New Zealand publishes a strategic plan every three years so it is clear how their activities will support artists, practitioners and arts organisations in the coming years. The new Strategic Plan 2010-2013 will take effect from 1 July 2010. A draft plan has been developed for 2010-2013 and Information on how you can provide feedback is available at www.creativenz.govt.nz . The due date for all feedback is 5pm on 16 October 2009.

Monkey Records label boss Nigel Braddock has received funding from Creative New Zealand and will be attending world music fair WOMEX in Copenhagen at the end of October representing The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band, The Hot Grits, An Emerald City and The Mamaku Project. The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band have been living in Berlin over the European summer and have played 20 gigs round the city including famous venues such as White Trash, Kaffee Burger, Supamolli and Lovelite. They will be returning to NZ for summer to undertake another of their legendary Gypsy Fever tours with DJ Balkanetic before relocating to Europe once again next year to tour and play festivals. Monkey has recently released digitally worldwide an album of traditional South Indian Carnatic music called Hey Ganesha! recorded in the Monkey studio at Karekare in 2005.

Cheese on Toast in association with Juice TV and Round Trip Mars Records is giving one lucky person the opportunity to make a music video for James Duncan's current single ‘The Cupboards Bare’. James says: "Shoot on any medium you can, from a camera phone to 16mm, laptop camera to the latest 'Red' camera and everything in between. I'm more interested in a good idea or a feel in the video than overblown production and ten thousand chocolate chip cookies for a crew of 35. You can star in it yourself or use an egg timer with a face on it to perform an epic head turn. Any unconventional interpretation of the song is totally valid and encouraged. The songs meaning is ambiguous at best but I guess it involves... ahem... a fleeting admiration and the sadness and madness that inevitably occurs the next day." Entries must be delivered on DVD to Universal Music – Site 3, Stables Building, 30 St Benedict’s Street, Newton or PO Box 617, Shortland St, Auckland 1140 no later than 5pm Thu 1 Oct. The Judging of the entries will be filmed on Friday 25th to be screened on NZOwn on Juice TV and the winning entry will become the Official Music Video for this amazing song - and will be played on hi-rotate all the following week on Juice TV. The winner will also receive the entire Round Trip Mars back catalogue, including James' album and a very limited gold cover cupboards Bare 7".

Pitch Black have been extremely productive of late and have recently knocked out remixes for Tiki ("Sleep Whisperer" on the new "Flux" album), The Laya Project ("A New Day" on the forthcoming remix album) and International Observer ("House of the Rising Dub" on the digital EP of the same name). Paddy has been busy producing Salmonella Dub's new album (out in November) and Mike has been working on the forthcoming World of Wearable Arts and New Zealand Music Awards shows. The band recorded 15 new songs over two weeks in June this year.

Auckland band Bear Cat has been working hard at being the best panda pop band in the universe. At the moment this has been pretty easy because they are the only panda pop band in the universe. Formed by Chopper Dan and Jocee Tuck in 2006, now in some sort of a silly play on the idea of a self-titled first album, they’ve released an album called Xiong Mao, which means 'Bear Cat' in Chinese. It features eight pop songs about pandas self-produced and recorded with friend Dave Parker in their bedrooms.

Paul Winders and the Goodness new album You can have it all will be released on September 26. Winders has been a part of the highly acclaimed Dunedin band The Verlaines since 1991 and has featured on the albums Way Out Where (1993), Over The Moon (1997), Potboiler (2007) and Corporate Moronic (2009). ‘Down Falls an Empire’ is the long-awaited debut album from Auckland rock band These Four Walls. Featuring the tracks Fly Home, Walk Away, Under the Shadows and the new single Sweet December, it's a bold, artistic statement from a band that have forged their own unique sound and style. It’s musically diverse, yet thematically consistent, taking the listener on a journey and presenting itself as a single piece of art as opposed to just a collection of songs.

The Upbeats release their new album ‘Big Skeleton’ this week. Be it the haunted click n’ bass soul of ‘Bones’, or the sub-grinding stream-of-consciousness narrative driven breakbeat insanity of ‘Carousel’, or their speaker-rupturing foray into dubstep on ‘Macabre’, or the drum n’ folk atmospherics of ‘Through The Night’, Big Skeleton lives in equal balance between the headphone headspace & the mindset of the club, which is a rare & terrifyingly beautiful combination in d&b.

Electric Wire Hustle have also released their new album ‘Electric Wire Hustle’. Developing their own twist on modern hip hop & psychedelic soul, Electric Wire Hustle introduces a new combination of prodigiously talented NZ musicians – David “Taay Ninh” Wright (Solaa), Mara TK (Pacific Heights, Julien Dyne) & Myele Manzanza (Recloose Live Band) & their fresh new sound.

Tommy Benefield, singer-songwriter behind the folk-rock reggae band Tommy, is back with a new band: The Fallen Horses & their brand new album, ‘Isolation Is the New Party’. The Fallen Horses are John Savage (drums), Clifford Leatherbarrow (bass) & Finn Johansson (lead guitar). They integrate seamlessly into Tommy’s songs, supporting his stunning voice & captivating lyrics. With a unique alt-country, indie-pop sound, they cast a melodic spell like no other.

Check out new videos from Bang Bang Eche – You And Me As Thick As Thieves’ directed by Mr Simon Ward, and new one from Savage – ‘I Love The Islands!’ directed by Chris Graham and filmed in Samoa earlier this year capturing Savage amongst the real beauty of Samoa and the Islands.
