James Kohler Shares Incisive Social Commentary in New Track 'Lights Out' + Video

07 December 2022 - 0 Comments

Independent prog artist James Kohler shares incisive social commentary in his new track Lights Out, penned during the 3-month lockdown in 2021 during a flash of inspiration. The tune is equal parts PJ Harvey, Neil Young and grass-roots arena-rock, offering a surprising progressive structure along with a devilish sense of irony crystallised through its narratively striking self-made official video.

"The lyrics are inspired by Hans-Georg Moeller, a contemporary German philosopher", says Kohler about the track, "Most especially his comments made on the 'double bind' of third party interests in social media and the idea of profile authenticity...

"In other words, Lights Out is a plea to regain your personal and psychological freedoms. because there's always someone better and more righteously assertive. You can find alternatives. Put the lights out and you'll see".

An established member of Tāmaki Makaurau's rich music scene, spinning effortless nuggets of prog-pop/indie psychadelia, his body of work runs deep, with plans to expand on his output with a never ending bootleg series. His studio album Will and Way is due for release early 2023. Speckled with brightly shining pop hooks and natural musicianship, his lyrics detail a spiritual journey amid the increasingly materialistic and nihilistic culture of our times. Will and Way is an honest plea towards finding inner peace, without losing the spirit to keep fighting the good fight.
