Somebody Do Something will get you grooving with their latest release, In The Ring. The loud and proud funk-pop track is the third single off their upcoming debut album As Rome Burns which is set for release in early 2023.

In The Ring was originally crafted at a distance during the first pandemic lockdown in 2020. Callum Margetts (guitar, back up vocals) and Marlee Rosoff (lead vocals) came up with the bones of the piece with Callum concepting the initial chords and sending these on to Marlee who fleshed out the lyrics and melody.

The opening line of the song “It feels like I am in a cage, transparent bars…” is a direct nod to the feeling of being trapped in the pandemic as it unfolded. The song carries on to talk about the feelings of social and emotional responsibility that Marlee felt in regards to the state of the world. “The pandemic heightened the sense of ‘oh sh*t’-ness that I already underlyingly felt. There is multiplicity in the feelings that show up in this track, as it sounds exciting and energetic, but it also has a sense of desperation about the state of things, as well as a sense of exhaustion about how things already were.” Then there’s the hope that emerges from that, with a feisty ‘I am not going down quietly’ kind of energy that resonates through in the choruses.

The sunshiney soulful warmth of the tune upholds the sense of victory and commitment to the cause that many are familiar with. Expressing the idea that it is not always easy to keep showing up for the things that you are passionate about, especially when there is so much uncertainty in the world and our future.

The recording of In The Ring was funded by the band’s 2021 Boosted NZ Campaign, where with the help of their supporters, they generated 110% of their $8000 fundraising goal. Without the ability to perform live for much of 2021 and early 2022, Somebody Do Something turned to perfecting their sound and bringing new material with them into the studio. However, the recording process had its costs, and the lack of income opportunities impacted their ability to earn the capital needed to record and produce a music video. A practical solution was found with the help of Aotearoa’s dedicated crowdfunding platform for the arts.

The band has recently welcomed Austyn Mills as their new bass player, with In The Ring being the first recording to feature his smooth bassline. After a string of successful local shows Somebody Do Something are set to perform live to air on RDU 98.5FM on Friday 18th November and they are in the process pencilling shows around New Zealand for the summer season.
