Producer/educator Zed Brookes and farm worker Andrew Johnstone have been making music together for 35 years, and When Summer Falls, Break Down the Walls is their second full-length album.
You can see some of the album's recording process in Costa Botes' new film When the Cows Come Home, currently screening at the NZ International Film Festival.
Whilst this album isn't the film's actual soundtrack (the film's music is composed by Tom McLeod), Johnstone's love of making music is a key part of the film.
So how did this all come about? Johnstone explains, “The album was basically complete when I found myself in the company of filmmaker Costa Botes (Forgotten Silver, The Making of 'The Lord of the Rings'). He’d come up from Wellington to film my cows but was increasingly turning the camera on me, which is how we all ended up in the studio."

Andrew Johnstone says, “Costa wanted some footage of us making music. We set ourselves a challenge to write and record something in two hours, which we did. It was named after the jar of honey sitting in Zed’s kitchen. Our foray into EDM is no folly, Zed’s a lecturer at the School of Audio Engineering and EDM is one of his subjects".
About Costa Botes' film When the Cows Come Home
"When The Cows Come Home is so much more than a film about one man and his connection to a couple of cows. It's a journey into rural NZ where beneath the Swandris, Aertex & Red Bands, rebel hearts strive to forge their own path. As much a portrait of a rural farming family, the sensitivity beneath the stoic front might surprise those who view farming as a tough and unemotional business."When The Cows Come Home Full NZIFF session times
