Racing are back with yet another addition to the “Bang Bang Friday” campaign. Headlining this release is new single Southern Lovers with its naughty wingman Gold holding down B-side duties.

This is the third release from Racing’s, 2022 Bang Bang Friday campaign, where the boys are dishing up double single releases in the lead-up to their sophomore album due for release in October 2022.

Racing’s Sven Pettersen says “Southern Lovers is an “ethereal banger built to uplift the wind lashed, sea-soaked land mass”. The song sits on top of a tumbling Celtic riff which encircles and hypnotizes the listener.

Upon recalling the song’s early days, lead singer Ed Knowles says; “The first time we played Southern Lovers as a band, we’d reach the end of the song - and without stopping – we’d start again from the top. A solid half hour later, we took it as a good sign that we were on to something.”

Made up of long-time collaborators Ed Knowles (vocals) and Sven Pettersen (guitar) - two crucial parts of the colossus that was The Checks - and two other heavy hitters on the Kiwi alt scene, Daniel Barrett (bass) and Izaak Houston (drums), Racing has gone on to forge its own path on the local indie rock scene.

Racing’s sophomore album out later this year follows on from critically-acclaimed 2018 debut album Real Dancing, which included radio hits Run Wild (50 weeks in NZ’s official rock chart) and Motel Pool.

Southern Lovers offers an exciting taste of what is to come from the band as they explore new musical territory.
