Music News - Melissa Partridge and Bruce Dennis Sing Winning Tunes

30 May 2008 - 0 Comments

Melissa Partridge’s self-titled recording ‘Melissa’ is the best country music album for 2008.

The Dunedin-based singer-songwriter received the Tui for the RIANZ Best Country Music Album 2008 in Gore tonight (May 30) at the NZ Country Music Awards.

At the same event, Bruce Dennis’ ‘Aint Gonna Run’ was named the APRA Best Country Song for 2008.

A guitarist and vocalist who began singing at the age of eight, Melissa Partridge is a multi-award winning performer and former Trans Tasman entertainer of the year. Last year at the age of 21, Melissa was inducted into the country music hall of fame in the USA.

Melissa plays rhythm guitar and is lead vocalist for Dunedin band U4EYA. Her own repertoire ranges from the traditional through country rock to modern ballads.

The other finalists for the RIANZ Best Country Music Album award were Jackie Bristow for ‘Crazy Love’ and The Cattlestops for ‘(Back to) Rosetta Road’.

New Zealand Music Awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says Melissa Partridge represents the future of country music.

“And it’s obviously in good hands. Melissa is already a multi-award winning artist and her dedication to country music can only be admired. She is a much deserved winner of the genre’s biggest annual award,” Mr Smith says.

‘Ain’t Gonna Run’ by Hamilton-based Bruce Dennis is from the album ‘All Our Days’ which the artist describes as “10 short stories”.

Bruce’s passion for ‘roots’ music coupled with his emergence as a songwriter have led to him becoming an in-demand opening act for international and local artists.

Ant Healey, Director of New Zealand Operations for APRA says songs are the foundation of the music business and Bruce is at the top of his game.

“Ain't Gonna Run is honest, it’s original and it’s undeniably memorable. Not just a great country song but a great song full stop.”

Attracting more than 5,000 country music fans during the festival, Gore’s Gold Guitar week is in its 35th year. For more information visit: www.goldguitars.co.nz
