Music News - 95bFM Brand Art Campaign Exhibition

07 December 2007 - 0 Comments

95bFM doesn’t know what it likes, but it does know about art. Or something like that.

A rather special art exhibition opens at Auckland’s Rakinos café on December 18th: a retrospective of exclusively-commissioned works by radio station 95bFM from notable local artists, representing the last twelve months of 95bFM’s visual presence nationwide.

Breaking with the tradition of brand positioning campaigns, which spell out precisely what is being branded, during 2007 95bFM commissioned twelve artists and designers to create works, which offered an answer to the question, “What does 95bFM mean?”

The individual artworks were issued, one per month, across a range of media, and the interpretations - published on street posters, postcards, magazine pages, and on the flipside of the 95bFM Bible show programme guide – offered a variety of perspectives. These could have raised more questions than any definitive answer, but the radio station wasn’t really looking for a definition of itself. Rather, it sought to demonstrate that 95bFM is part of a wider artistic community that is mutually supportive, and any “positioning” is not something that can be dictated.

Included in the exhibition are works from Ruban Nielson (Mint Chicks), Bradley Fafejta (Teenwolf/Brand New Math), Matt Henry, the Demiwhores’ Ed Gains and MF Joyce, Henrietta Harris, Alan Holt, Stella Corkery (Saturday Shop), Jack Brougham, Peter Heckman, Vincent Shields, and Damon Belchalmers.

Limited edition prints will be available for sale, and the exhibition will be followed by the release of a 2008 calendar of all works on show.
