Who will be named New Zealand’s top rockers?

The competition is hotter than ever this year for the Best Rock Album category at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, says PPNZ.

The copyright agency for recording artists and labels/distributors is sponsoring the PPNZ Best Rock Album. The finalists are Evermore for Real Life; Opshop for Second Hand Planet and the Mint Chicks for Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!

PPNZ general manager Mark Roach says the organisation is stoked to provide support for the rock category at New Zealand’s biggest music night.

“With finalists of the calibre of Evermore, Opshop and The Mint Chicks, there certainly is going to be some big noise around the rock Tui this year.

“Rock plays a huge part in New Zealand’s music psyche and long may it contnue,” he says.

“We hope our involvement will help publicise how our organisation helps musicians to be properly rewarded for their efforts.”

Mr Roach also thanks New Zealand rock legend Dave Dobbyn for helping to highlight the vital role PPNZ plays in the careers of recording artists in a new TV ad available to view at www.ppnz.co.nz.

PPNZ licences and collects funds from cafés, venues, pubs, broadcasters and a host of other places where recorded music is performed to and for the public. It then distributes those funds annually to the copyright owners of the music – the record companies and musicians.

This year PPNZ celebrates its 50th anniversary and expects to distribute funds to about 650 bands and 55 labels/distributors this year. It estimates it has paid out about $7 million since the RAP Fund’s first distribution eight years ago.
