Grammy-winning music coach brings accessibility to the NZ Music Industry

29 September 2021 - 0 Comments

Establish Music’s Frances Dickinson is offering music practitioners with access needs the opportunity to take an exciting new career step.

In November 2021, Establish Music will launch ‘Access All Areas', a ‘first of its kind’ pilot programme for music practitioners with disability or impairment. The programme will provide free coaching for individuals with access needs and will explore solutions to the barriers being experienced to promote accessibility within the music industry.

Dickinson is a leading music coach and has worked with some of New Zealand's biggest musical artists including Grammy award winner Lorde and Six60. She also happens to be Autistic with ADHD, but uses the term ‘neurodiverse’ to describe her way of relating to the world. “The inspiration for the programme stems from my own experiences” she explains. “I’ve had to overcome the challenges of being in a competitive industry without accessibility support, and it’s not always been easy.” Dickinson now wants to find ways to design with, and not for, those with access needs and look for solutions to the challenges that exist. “I want to bring inclusivity to the forefront of our thinking so we can find new and exciting ways to work together.”

Chris Dent, front man for Tui award winning alt folk group Albi and the Wolves, describes his experience of being a professional musician while managing low vision as challenging at times. “I tend to be an optimist so I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about all the times that I really needed help.” But for Dent, industry events can be difficult to navigate: “I just see a sea of faces and I often don’t recognise a lot of them, sometimes it can be overwhelming and intense.”

Access All Areas will focus on giving music practitioners who have unique needs the opportunity to develop new skills and tools in an accessible format, and it is open to new, aspiring and established music practitioners. Participants will be able to engage with a series of professional mentoring sessions including vocal coaching, songwriting, career planning and artist development. The programme is free for all participants thanks to support from the New Zealand Music Commission.

Applications are open now and the closing date is 11th November 2021.
