Music News - Spacifix nabs three at Pacific Music Awards

01 June 2007 - 0 Comments

West Auckland group Spacifix is the big winner at the Pacific Music Awards announced in Auckland tonight (May 31).

Highlight of the evening for the nine-member group is a coveted Tui for the Niu FM Best Pacific Music Album for “Much Love”, Spacifix’ debut album.

The band also picks up awards for APRA Best Pacific Song for “Gotta Get Like This” and Radio 531PI Best Pacific Group.

To acknowledge the band’s Tui award win, Spacifix will also be honoured at the New Zealand Music Awards in October.

Multi-instrumentalist and Hip Hop and RnB producer John Chong-Nee grabs two awards – for NZ Music Commission Best Pacific Male Artist and Niu FM Best Pacific Hip Hop Artist for “Just Getting By On Love”.

Other winners are:

· Aaradhna who picks up the Counties Manukau District Health Board – Smokefree Best Pacific Female Artist for “I Love You”.

· The Yandall Sisters who gain the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs Lifetime Achievement Award.

· Vela Manusaute from Killa Kokonut Krew Entertainment who was selected for the Phillip Fuemana Most Promising Artist Award.

Spacifix arrived on the New Zealand music scene in May 2006 with the popular release, “Sunshine Day”, which was quickly followed by two more singles, “Gotta Get Like This” and “Make Things Right”. The group’s debut album “Much Love” was released in October 2006 to great acclaim. They also starred in their own TV show.

Pacific Music Awards chairperson the Rev Mua Strickson Pua says, “The Pacific Music Awards winners affirm the journeys of our artists, our industry, our communities and Aotearoa New Zealand Music for the global market."

NZ Music Awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says RIANZ is proud to support the Pacific Music Awards as the home of the Tui for Best Pacific Music Album.

“The depth and vibrancy of Pacific music in New Zealand is reflected every year in the high standard of entries we receive. This year was no exception, and it’s great to see Spacifix pick up the award for Best Pacific Music Album. To have fresh talent coming through can only help grow the Pacific music industry in this country.”

The third annual Pacific Music Awards were held at Manukau City’s TelstraClear Pacific venue and celebrate Pacific music and artists. Previous finalists and winners include a who’s who of Pacific music and some of the most successful artists within the New Zealand music industry. The impressive live performances at the awards ceremony showcased past, present and future Pacific artists, showcasing the strength of Pacific music
