Aotearoa artist Jol delivers hook-laden guitar-driven new single 'Theorize'

11 June 2021 - 0 Comments

He’s a familiar face on the Aotearoa music scene, lending his talents to many well-known names over the years, now Jol Mulholland (multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, engineer) - AKA Jol - steps out on his own with new single, Theorize.

Listen HERE.

Written and recorded in just two hours, Theorize sets the scene for Jol’s new album due out in the coming months, on which the Christchurch-raised, Auckland-based artist wears all hats, from writer and artist to producer and mix engineer. “I actually meant for the new record to be a full band one but the lockdown hit and I couldn’t hit stop. So it’s all written/produced and mixed by myself, and mastered by my good friend Olly Harmer at the Lab in Mt Eden - my home away from home,” he says.

Theorize is upbeat; laden with jangly guitar and melodic hooks galore. It’s all about that “general back and forth we have at work or home or at the bus stop, theorizing about things we don’t know the answer to”.

The new single gives a taste of what’s to come on the album: energetic, slightly bent guitar pop that would not be out of place at a dinner party-turned-rollicking house party. Lyrically, Theorize hints at feelings and themes woven into the upcoming album, tying together how Jol felt during the making of the album, “Like many people, I had so many questions and theories this time last year,” he says.

Releasing music for over 20 years, with albums The Mots, Mulholland, Eugene Told Me You Were Dead, and Stop & Start Again, the Silver Scroll-nominated artist has also worked with a long list of well-known local and international artists and orchestras. This impressive list includes, but is not limited to, the Auckland Philharmonia and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras, Anna Coddington, Tami Neilson, Anika Moa, Neil Finn, Tim Finn, Troy Kingi, Theia, Racing, French for Rabbits, Hollie Smith, Boh Runga and many more.

Keep an eye out for the grungy music video that will accompany Theorize, to be released in the coming weeks.
