Burn My Shadow Unveil Hard Hitting Album 'Hollywood Ugly'

19 May 2021 - 0 Comments

Burn My Shadow are proud to unveil their debut album, an 11-track hard-hitting masterpiece, Hollywood Ugly. Bursting at the seams with grungy-industrial drums, nu-metal-esque guitar riffs and brazenly punchy vocals, the entire body of work comes together to create a picture that is emotionally dark, yet completely freeing. This feels like rock music should, pushing the boundaries and offering up something liberating.

Millions around the world have heard the voice and music of Broghan Paige and Jayde Marter; this prolific pair of video game composers have had their music featured around the globe, from hit game Into The Dead 2, to short documentaries featured by the National Geographic, in addition to projects for WETA and webcomic "Swords" by Matt Wills.

Speaking of their creative relationship, Broghan says, "This is the culmination of 6 years of work that happened alongside what we were learning from working in video game audio, advertising audio, and just really getting our chops in the industry. A lot of the contracts that we worked on over the years were light hearted and funny, and we have done a lot of comedy projects too. This is the total flipside of that. When we were making goblin noises to an 80's Casio solo on Monday for a game, we were thrashing Jayde's studio sub until 12am Monday night making Hollywood Ugly.

One of my favourite things about being in a band with my best friend is that our commitment to the project is truly matched by one another. I have huge professional respect for Jayde, we have worked together very successfully for many years, and I am really proud that we stuck it out in order to release this piece of work despite everything that has happened and how hectic it has been. That is kind of a testament to what the album is all about. It is true that things do not always work out the way you may have first imagined them. But if you get blown off course stay true to yourself, your commitment and your vision, and work hard. You can still make it."

Like their previous single releases, Burn My Shadow does not hold back with this debut; the subject matter is candid, honest and raw. They do not shy away from pushing forward with gutsy lyrics and heartfelt authenticity, delving into themes of mental health, emotional pain, and then redemption.

Hollywood Ugly started off as introspective poetry about things that were happening in our lives, but what it became in the end was an album about moving on and having the strength to accept what cannot be changed whilst changing what we could not accept.

It is probably primarily an album about what it is like living with a chronic mental illness. But if you listen closely, it is also about persistence, self-respect, self-determination, autonomy and personal responsibility. It is about not settling for something you are unhappy with simply because it is what you think you deserve. It is about making it happen for yourself in spite of your own obstacle.” - Broghan Paige

Hollywood Ugly is available on all streaming services from Wednesday 19th May.
