Music News - Southern Amp - First Announcement

07 September 2006 - 0 Comments

NZ South Island concert goers will be treated to a bigger, better and probably warmer (!!) outdoor music festival when the annual SOUTHERN AMP concert converges on Christchurch for the second summer running. This time around though the wait for the thousands of live music fans from around the Mainland will be a few months longer, but Southern Amp organisers promise that the wait will be well worth it..!

SOUTHERN AMP 2 has been moved to late March 2007, with the new date and venue for the festival to be announced around the end of October.

There are lots of reasons, but the decision was finally made following the recent announcement by U2 promoters of rescheduled dates for their 2 sold out concerts in Auckland. With the Irish supergroup’s previously postponed March shows now re-confirmed for late November, these new clashed with one of the possible weekends planned for Southern Amp 2 in Christchurch, meaning thousands of fans who had already committed to U2 tickets would miss the South Island multi-stage concert event.

“Moving it earlier in November was just impossible with so much already going on around Canterbury Show Week, we also would have less time to plan and promote and with lots of students in exams early November it made better sense to move it to the other side of the holidays and end off the summer with a loud bang!” said Southern Amp organisers.

Last year’s all-day Southern Amp concert, held in late November 05 at QE2 Park, drew thousands of fans from all round the country to one of the best outdoor multi-stage concert events the city had seen for years. The huge main stage rocked with some of best NZ and Australian live bands around including The Living End, Blindspott, Elemeno P, Spiderbait, Pluto, Steriogram, End of Fashion, Breaks Co-op, The D4 & The Bleeders with the separate MINISTRY OF SOUND dance tent hosting a non-stop major line up of DJ grooves, electronica and urban sounds. If you weren’t there you can see what you missed at - www.southernamp.co.nz – and when you visit sign up to the member database for regular updates!

SOUTHERN AMP 2 will be bigger this time with the addition of a third stage solely for artists from NZ’s South Island. Details of how to submit demos, info, etc for a chance to perform on this local stage will be announced via the website soon. Once again the main Rock Stage and Ministry of Sound tent will present some of the best international and local live music around with details of all artists being announced through regular newsletters from the Southern Amp website and media releases leading up to the event.

So the wait’s a bit longer but SOUTHERN AMP will be back – bigger, better and louder in March 2007!!
