Music News - Beloved Kiwi band TOI marks a milestone with new music

Wellington-based TOI (formerly Tunes of I) is set to release its new single, Thinking Too Much on August 14 signalling a new chapter for the beloved New Zealand band.
The single marks a change of direction for TOI and is described as their “bridging track” by incorporating touches of the well-loved roots vibe of Tunes Of I while looking to the band’s new direction. It’s also a taster of what their upcoming EP will sound like, with the renowned and respected Devin Abrams (Drax Project, Pacific Heights, ex-Shapeshifter) on production duties.
Thinking Too Much offers up a strong message of positivity, “Try not to get caught up in the little small problems of life. Tuning in to the signs of life, which draw from the elements (whispers on the wind etc) is a reminder to relax and enjoy life with those that you trust and love - don’t let the problems overcome all the good that surrounds you. Love over fear.”
Affectionately called TOI by close fans, the name change marks a new era for the six-piece ensemble.
“We’re breaking away from our roots and are exploring a different avenue. We still have our original sound in there, because it’s fundamental to who we are, but we are now heading into a new future of dance and electro-funk. We came together over our love of music we are inspired by; Acts such as TrinityRoots, Kora, The Black Seeds and Fat Freddy’s Drop. However, this newest incarnation of our band marks a modern development of our vibe and style.”
This captivating band has travelled the length of Aotearoa performing headlining and supporting stages alike. The musical integrity of TOI is evident in every band member’s commitment to their craft, promising a live show of mind-blowing proportions.
The name change is also a nod to some of the member’s Maori ancestry, “The word Toi in te Reo translates to a number of things, one being the peak or summit of excellence; something that we all drive for. In a more general sense, it is used as a term for the arts, in whatever medium, but can also be translated as genesis or the birth. All of this is intrinsic and appropriate to our name change and change of musical direction.” TOI has now set their sights on the brighter lights that come with a new name and an evolving sound tailored to a modern audience.
TOI has performed as Tunes of I twice at Spark Arena, first in support of Red Hot Chili Peppers and then Tash Sultana. No strangers to the festival stage, they have performed throughout Aotearoa at many festivals, including a four-show run with Fat Freddy’s Drop. They have toured Australia and NZ multiple times in support of their good friends Ocean Alley, and have shared the stage with Sticky Fingers, UB40, The Original Wailers, Troy Kingi, Katchafire, The Black Seeds, L.A.B. and more.
Their live performances are the key to their success; high-level production and sound seamlessly enhance the talents of this experienced touring band.There are no limitations for this exciting new stage in their musical journey.
