Hannah May Gets Real And Honest In Powerful New Single 'Pretty Girl'

19 June 2020 - 0 Comments

Brisbane based singer-songwriter, 2020 Toyota Starmaker Finalist and former X Factor NZ Finalist, Hannah May, releases her bold new single Pretty Girl and is using her voice and songwriting to speak up against the beauty standards of society through the powerful lyrics of the track.

“I’ve been working since five years old, earned the money in my pocket, got a heart of gold and that don’t mean that much in this world I know” are some of the honest lyrics from the deeply personal track. As a young female country artist, May has faced insecurities throughout her career and believes that she is not the only one that has felt ‘not good enough’ because of the way she looks. The singer is standing up against the standards of society that constantly remind us that we need to look a certain way to be valued. “I am acknowledging that I am a musician. Not a model. Not an influencer or a dancer or a comedian. I am a musician and that is enough”. May worked with well known music producers Matt Fell of Sydney and Matt Bartlem of Gold Coast to make the dream of Pretty Girl turn into a reality. It is a personal song but one of which needs to be heard by people who might relate. The track builds throughout, starting with an acoustic guitar and ends up as a big pop anthem. The verse is honest, the pre chorus is catchy and the chorus is BIG. Whether you’re a country fan or a pop fan you are sure to like the track with hints of Haim and hints of Kelsea Ballerini.

Hannah May rose to fame in 2015 where she and her former duo Mae Valley placed 7th in the hit Television Series ‘The X Factor NZ’ where they received a record deal and went on to release a number of country pop hits including Brightside and opened for country superstars Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and Kelsea Ballerini. Following their split in 2018, Hannah realised she had to start from scratch as a solo artist and released her debut country song Finally which debuted in the top 10 in the NZ iTunes Charts. After some soul searching, the kiwi artist decided that Australia had been awaiting her so she packed up her guitar and moved to Brisbane, and began furthering her career in a new place. After spending 10 months playing back to back gigs across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, May independently released her second single Passenger Seat which received success in both New Zealand and Australia making its way into the NZ Official Hot Singles Chart and onto the NZ On Air new tracks February compilation. The song made traction on NZ, Australia and European radio and also placed in the NZ iTunes country charts.

Passenger Seat is a love song with gentle lyrics and a catchy pace that suggests. Its appeal is irresistible on two fronts – May clearly has the ability to write songs that become earworms, and also songs that you want to listen to because they make you happy.’ - Joelene Country Music Blog 01.20
