Repairs reveal brooding video made in lockdown

26 May 2020 - 0 Comments

Devised during the lockdown and set for release during NZ Music Month, Auckland’s Repairs unveil their debut video for single Last Chances as a tragic monochromatic short story.

The lovelorn song is composed around the looping basslines by Nicola Edwards (bass/vocals), with Martin Phillips building up a maniacal wave of post-punk guitar and fortified by heavyrolling drummer James Milne.

Last Chances is about being trapped in the cycle of a wrong relationship. You always hope things will change – but then are left with disappointment and resentment when it inevitably never does,” said Edwards. The catchy ‘sad-pop’ song builds swiftly into a final frenzied crescendo of resentment.

Visually based on this anguish within toxic relationships, the moody mini-film - which features a gangly teddy bear - was shot during some stunning autumnal days in Kirikiriroa throughout alert Level 3.

Produced and directed by Kat Waswo, the music video enthusiast took on the task of filming while isolating at home alone with her two children. “They helped!” she said.

“I like the challenge of pushing the boundaries of typical performance-based music videos,” Waswo said. “I really feel this song… I could see the story unfold as soon as I heard it,” she says of the 90’s-inspired black and white concept.

“It was actually a nice outlet for me to unleash my inner goth. Like, come on teddy - we’re going crying,” Kat laughs. Having to also provide the ‘acting talent’ under the strict lockdown, she was forced to get creative with her immediate surroundings.

The final product is a stunning fusion of tempo and contrast. “We’re really lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented person during lockdown,” Nicola said. “And we absolutely love what Kat’s created.”

Repairs have been busy over the last 12 months creating new material and conjuring up an exciting collection of tracks - ready to drip-feed to audiences later on this year.

The trio recently contributed their previously unreleased track Chillgorithm to a fundraiser album organised by Hamilton Underground Press during the lockdown for local gig venue Nivara Lounge.

With more high-tempo tracks on the cards, Repairs are certainly a band in NZ’s loud-noise music scene that is worth keeping an ear to the underground for.
