Sports Dreams elicits vivid vignettes of North Island roadtrips in a "hazy time-lapsed sonic reflection" (Undertheradar); conjuring images of late afternoon sun on the Paekakariki stretch of State Highway 1. Shannen Petersen's "powerful and dramatic vocals...sway and drift through layers of heartfelt pain, betrayal, and fear" (White Light/White Heat) while maintaining a sense of calm. Backed by Fraser Williams, the band was initially formed in Palmerston North, but is now spread between there and Wellington.

First single, the twice-eponymous Sports Dreams, reached #2 on the national Student Radio Network charts, and sat at #1 for three weeks on their hometown station Radio Control. Second single and fast fan-favourite Drive is about recognising your mistakes, but also recognising where your culpability ends. The repeated refrain of 'I go too fast sometimes, but it's not me who drives you/you get too close sometimes, I put all my trust in you' sails over waves of synth in a blissfully melancholic chorus. Says The Spinoff when selecting Drive as a song of the month: "Petersen’s soaring/plaintive vocal approach provides an unique offset to the track’s marriage of subdued guitar chime and moody, motorik synth."

Sports Dreams is released via Papaiti Records and is available on streaming platforms and on cassette tape from Bandcamp.
