14 June 2012 - 0 Comments

Brought to you by AUSA and the University of Auckland, in conjunction with Skinny Mobile, Juice TV, SMP Solutions, Artist Voice The University of Auckland and The Edge.

The Auckland University Students Association are planning something very special for our students by organising the biggest and best event we’ve ever put together, at the largest venue in the country! On SATURDAY JULY 28TH AT VECTOR ARENA the AUSA have an exceptional billing planned featuring world class artists and DJs in an evening moving from bands earlier on to a full-on dance floor party as witching hour approaches.

Kimbra is fast becoming a global phenomenon and we're thrilled to welcome her back for a one-off exclusive performance. It's perfect timing for a homecoming – KIMBRA has been busy overseas making some New Zealand musical history!

KIMBRA's debut album VOWS was released in the USA and crashed into the Billboard Album Chart at #14 - the highest ever USA album chart position by a female recording artist from New Zealand. KIMBRA is also the first Kiwi female artist to have featured on a USA Billboard Number 1 hit single.

Somebody That I Used To Know has spent an astonishing 22 weeks in the US charts and is currently sitting at #1 in the Hot 100. It's a world-wide smash and has hit #1 in a staggering twenty three countries including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Australia and NZ. The song is now also the highest selling in NZ chart single history that features a New Zealand artist, and the second highest selling of all time.

We are thrilled that Kiwi music icons The Black Seeds are able to join us, a matter of days before they head off for their European tour and festival performances. The level of popularity and respect that they command is easy to see with their brand new album DUST AND DIRT going straight to the top of the album charts. They are the first NZ band to grab the number one slot this year, and they continue to be legends! The chart placing tops off a successful run for the band following tours of the US and Europe with DUST AND DIRT garnering praise overseas, reaching #1 on Germany’s iTunes reggae charts, and #2 on the iTunes reggae charts in the U.S.

Later in the night we bring you the best of New Zealand dubstep with Mt Eden who have over 80 million YouTube plays and are now veterans of many successful world tours and long nights! Australian electro house act Vandalism will complete the mash-up. Ruby Frost Auckland’s very own Stargirl to Bowie's Starman will kick things off showcasing her band’s dramatic pop and glitter that forms her sparkling debut album Volition, produced in New York by Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen) and due out on June 8th.

AUSA president Arena Williams is excited about being able to put on such a high profile concert at Vector Arena and thinks it's an amazing event for students. "We have a fantastic full evening’s entertainment for our students and it's great that we're able to bring Kimbra home." says Williams. "She's now a world-wide star, but she's had very little opportunity to perform here recently so it's a real treat for our students to be able to see her play as part of our lineup.”

KIMBRA is certainly one of the hottest and most exciting new artists in the world right now. VOWS is already a platinum selling album in Australia and New Zealand and by achieving that record breaking USA album chart entry at #14 it’s no surprise to find her gracing the cover of magazines and newspapers globally. Having just sold out an Australian tour to rave reviews and standing ovations, KIMBRA is currently touring the States with Foster The People before heading back with her band for one-offs at Splendour In The Grass and our very own mini festival at Vector Arena in Auckland on Saturday 28th July.

The students have announced the release of a very limited number of public tickets and urge people to buy quickly as these tickets will sell-out extremely fast. Ample discounted tickets for University of Auckland students will also be released.

$65 public tickets on sale at Ticketmaster.co.nz

$20 University of Auckland tickets will be available on campus at the AUSA reception.
