Rising indie-pop artist Bridges has today released Pills - a personal and poignant song, which delivers an empowering message about mental health.

On first listen Pills is an upbeat pop track brimming with optimism; scratch below the surface and you’ll also find a song laden with meaning, bravely depicting Bridges’ ongoing mental health journey. “After being in a really low place and diagnosed with PTSD, depression and nightmares, I was needing more help than therapy alone was able to give me,” explains Auckland-based Bridges.

“For years I’d been told medication wasn’t helpful, by someone I really trusted, until I decided to go against their advice and decide for myself what was right for me. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she adds.

It was this deeply personal experience that Bridges drew on when she sat down to write with the respected songwriter and producer Josh Naley (AKA the artist Wells*). “I felt comfortable writing about such a personal topic with Josh… he’s also really skilled at crafting lyrics for big and complicated subject matters and putting them in ways that are easier to understand.”

Pills came together with additional production from Rāwiri Waters: “The atmospheric sounds throughout the track are his work. He understands what I’m going for with the Bridges sound more than anyone!”. With the legendary Simon Gooding on mixing: “Simon has mixed some of my favourite songs, so I was stoked he agreed to mix one of mine!”. And finally, mastering by the Grammy-winning Brian Lucey: “I love the warm and full sound his work has, and he’s got a crazy impressive track record of mastering.”

The result is an impeccable piece of pop, with a powerful and important message. “I just want to remind people that you can choose to do what’s right for you. There is help out there and the decision on how to best help yourself ultimately lies with you.”

Pills is the first single in the next chapter in Bridges’ exciting journey, which began with the release of the exquisite singles Sister (2019) and Weightless Without (2020). With a penchant for meaningful and clever pop, Bridges is without question a rising talent, who deserves your full attention.
