17-Year-Old Singer/Songwriter James Constable: New Album 'Tui' Takes Flight

18 June 2021 - 0 Comments

Singer/songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist James Constable is independently releasing his brand new album, Tui today.

Tui has a bright, jangly style that blends classic nostalgia and pop sensibility. Influenced by bands such as The Beatles and The Smiths, as well as local acts The Mutton Birds and The Chills, the album features a mix of classic indie rock ‘anthems’, like Maria, Let Him Go and The World’s Greatest Number, and slower, laidback tunes such as Sundress or Social Butterfly.

17-year-old James is a naturally gifted musician. From a very young age, James could be found in his room playing his guitar creating melodies and lyrics so it was very evident from early on that James would become a songwriter. Because of this, he has been set on a career in music, and to date has released a number of albums and EPs with a discography consisting of around 60 original songs. His lyrical content is very mature for his age, filled with out-of-the-box perceptions of the world around him. James would say that his music is for "the shy person in the back of the room; not popular, not angsty, just kinda there...like me”.

Having developed a great ear for songwriting and producing, James has a clear vision for his music stating, “I’m quite independent as a person and have a very strong idea of what I want the music to sound like. I feel like the best way to get the music to sound like it does in my head is to do it myself.”. That is not to say he has had no help; much of the mixing was supervised by Will McGillivray (formerly of Nomad) at SOLE Music Academy, where James is a student.

Following the release of Tui, James hopes to start playing across the South Island, especially after he graduates high school at the end of this year. He is also interested in signing to a label at some point in the future, with particular interest in Flying Nun Records.

Tui is now available on all streaming platforms. James is celebrating the release of the album with a show at Two Thumb Brewery on June 20th, alongside fellow Christchurch acts Rhodry Yates, Steffany Beck and Courtney Allison.
