Gig & Concert News - Auckland Live Celebrates The Music Of Aotearoa And Those Who Make It This NZ Music Month

This May, Auckland Live celebrates NZ Music Month | Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa and Auckland’s status as a UNESCO City of Music with a vibrant, fun and 100% music line-up of free performances, events, and activations for all people and all ages, smack bang in the middle of the city.
As Tamaki Makaurau’s largest performing arts platform Auckland Live is proud of its key role in supporting and championing Kiwi music and the people who make it.
Auckland Live and Auckland Conventions, Venues & Events director, Robbie Macrae, says NZ Music Month is a highlight of the organisation’s music calendar, and one it takes great pride in celebrating and supporting.
“By investing in programming music – be it solo artists, live gigs, interactive events, and new experiences – Auckland Live champions Kiwi music and creates a central hub in the city giving the public free access to some of our very best performers and music creators.
“Auckland Live takes its role as a key facilitator and developer of the performing arts in the city seriously, and we’re thrilled to highlight the role music plays throughout Tamaki Makaurau this May.”
From May 1, Auckland Live will be transforming the city with pop-up music, starting with live mini gigs at the brand-new See. Do. Auckland pop-up at the downtown Britomart Station. Starring a rotation of some of 95bFM’s best DJs each Thursday night from 5pm-6pm; talented young performers from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Aspiring Musicians Programme serenading morning commuters on Tuesdays, Waiata Wednesdays (your chance to sing out loud alongside Maori cultural ropu Hiwa) and the SUSO Emerging Artists sweetening up the sounds for rush hours mid-week; record store Flying Out popping up on NZ Music T-Shirt Day; the super-cool interactive musical installation Hopscotch by artist Simon Watts in tune daily between 7am and 7pm; plus an in-store piano inviting all to spend some time tinkling the ivories.
Acknowledging the vast musical and cultural history of our city, Auckland Live launches Historical Music Venue walking tours every Saturday at 12.30 pm from the 8th to the 29th of May.
Following the history of the local live music scene from the 1950's to today, this memory-packed tour led by award-winning music author and historian Gareth Shute (Audioculture) kicks off at the former busy 1960’s nightlife district that existed around the modern day Britomart precinct and weaves up the side streets around Queen Street to Aotea Square, taking time to point out landmarks and decipher clues to where long-gone venues once stood. This fascinating tour will also be available from 8th May as a self-guided option on the ALK City Tours app, downloaded via Apple Store or Google Play.
Continuing to celebrate the month, Aotea Square will be a central music hub with a wide range of experiences. Following Six60’s sell-out, history-making Eden Park show, Notable Pictures’ acclaimed feature documentary Six60: Till the Lights Go Out will tell the untold story of the band on the Auckland Live Digital Stage on May 6th, complementing a series of lunchtime screenings of music videos and short music documentaries.
Returning to Aotea Square for 2021 will be the high-energy Piano Stairs, installed leading up to the Aotea Centre. A treat for young and old, this interactive piece originally created by Remo Saraceni, was a hit in its 2016 run and is sure to be a firm favourite this year.
