Carla Werner makes a return as Native Soul Project with new single 'Time'

02 March 2021 - 0 Comments

Multi-genre singer, producer, writer and performer Carla Werner has made a return to New Zealand after 20 years and today releases new music under the moniker Native Soul Project.

Time is Werner’s first dub, electronic, roots record under the moniker Native Soul Project alongside Californian bassist and primary member, Alison Wunderland.

Time sets up the dub-sensibility of what is to come on the album, the dub, electronic roots inspired, True Nature; a culmination of tracks written over several years drawing influence from Alpha & Omega, Massive Attack, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Lee Scratch Perry and Bob Marley.

Werner says; “Alison’s hypnotic bass parts define the sound, and that meditative groove is everywhere,” and the track “speaks to the realisation that change is necessary to grow and that old habits die hard but die they must”.

“LA can grind you down if you stay in it too long. I was questioning my sense of place, home, music, life and in particular a relationship that wasn’t quite working out. ‘Time’ is a song stating the obvious. I was looking for relief, and hoping it would be music to take me away and out of the stagnation.” says Werner.

Written, produced and mixed by Werner mostly in Los Angeles, the track was finished in Auckland under quarantine when Werner returned home after living in LA for 20 years, enlisting long-time friend Lucius Borich (Cog) to mix drums and bass.

The song was written in just a few hours and immediately after writing it, Carla filmed a video for it.

“I went LA’s Elysian Park to film the video before it was actually completed because I was so inspired by the colours of the sky and earth after the rain and it felt like it was the perfect visual opportunity for the song. When it rains in LA, it’s a beautiful thing to partake in. While filming my sequences in super slow-mo (240fps), I magically caught a falcon in full dive soaring down behind me. At 2:58 in the music video, when I’m singing, “now I want to go, on the road” the falcon drops right down behind me. I thought that was incredibly fortunate and magical.”

Penning a deal with Columbia Records, Sony Music (US) in 2000 and later releasing Departure with the help of Coldplay Producer, Ken Nelson, the artist gradually began to emerge as a serious singer/songwriter. The collaboration with UK DJ, Paul Oakenfold on the iconic trance song, Southern Sun fortified Werner as an internationally-acclaimed artist. The track has gone on to become one of the biggest trance songs of all time with DJ Tiesto’s Remix garnering 4.7 million streams on Spotify and 2.5 million views on YouTube.

Continuing to frequent the EDM world as a trance lyricist and vocalist, working regularly with the likes of Roger Shah, Kris O’Neil, Darren Tate and Sleepthief to name a few, she also composes music for film and television through her licensing agents, Ocean Park Music in Santa Monica having had composition Edge of Joy feature in Season two and three of Shameless.

My Lover's Ghost EP featuring You Can Follow Me premiered in US TV show Degrassi, and the EP’s title track appears in New Zealand’s Brokenwood Mysteries, in 2021.

Werner’s love of live performance runs parallel to that of writing, and Werner has toured and performed extensively around the globe. Native Soul Project had their first gig at Reggae on the Mountain in Southern California in 2015 and since then have played headline and support shows alongside the likes of reggae heavyweights Piracy Conspiracy, Pato Banton, Toots & the Maytels, Alborosie, Soul Syndicate (Fully Fullwood, Santa Davis, Tony Chin) and Sly & Robbie.

Catch Native Soul Project live as main support on all three dates of the Marley NZ All-Stars Tour happening Easter Weekend (April 2, 3, 4) in Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North and Mount Maunganui. Werner will perform in two-piece mode, playing live instrumentation to track with interspersions of free-form DJ moments throughout. Tour dates for True Nature coming soon.
