Polyphusion 2005 - “Live”
Posted: Tue May 3, 2005 6:08 pm
With the recent inaugural Pasifika Music Awards held in Auckland earlier this year, Polyphusion steps up in 2005 by hosting 3 showcase events, for Christchurch's Pasifika and Maori established and emerging musicians, - including, ‘Live’, a night of local bands playing loud and proud at the Jetset Lounge on Sat 21 May, 8pm til late.

Developed from last year’s one off concert in the Square, Polyphusion - a marketing opportunity that fuses Christchurch’s Maori and Pasifika musicians and their music, also identifies three premiere spots for live music in Christchurch, the Jetset Lounge, the Dux de Lux and again, the Cathedral Square.

“The night time concerts give opportunities for the more established musicians to showcase their stuff loud and proud at the Jetset Lounge, and then again in an intimate acoustic set “Unplugged” at the Dux de Lux on the last day of the month…” explains Pacific Underground Musical Director Posenai Mavaega “…and not all of the bands have played at these venues, so there’s another opportunity there…so Polyphusion gives that platform for bands to look at marketing themselves.”

Mavaega joins, Vaemu Fidow of local R&B band ‘Que’, Mark Vanilau of Tribalincs, Tanya Muagututi’a also from of performing arts collective Pacific Underground, and Earl Simpson in support of local Pasifika and Maori musicians, an ideal that has been the foundation of Pacific Underground Music Production (P.U.M.P) since it’s early days.

The 2 other events of Polyphusion are; “Skool’s Out ” on Fri 27 May, Jetset Lounge from 8pm til late, and “Unplugged” on Tues 31 May at the Dux de Lux from 6pm - late.

“Skool’s Out” includes bands from Aranui High School, Hornby High School, Christchurch Boys’ High School, Mairehau High School and Shirley Boys’ High School. Mark Vanilau,
a Music Mentor at these schools, presented the concept as support for young musicians, and encouragement to take part in these kind of events and those already accessible to them, like the Coke Smokefree Rockquest.

“There is a rise in numbers of young musicians coming out of this programme, so Polyphusion is a step up from performing at their School Assemblies, to preparation for the Coke Smokefree Rockquest later on in the year, and the students are pretty excited about it all.” says Vanilau.

An informal workshop will be held at “Unplugged”, Tues 31 May, Dux de Lux from 6pm, before the music begins. Polyphusion is supported by by APRA/AMCOS, and Core Education, and Pacific Underground and Tribalincs.
