“Blue Hotel”

According to Neil Finn, “Blue Hotel’ is a place where the earthly meets the ethereal every night and people hover on the brink, together and alone in rooms where the windows don't open.”

That was the starting point for a song he penned for his mate Jimmy Barnes.

“Blue Hotel” is the centerpiece of Jimmy Barnes’ latest hit album, OUT IN THE BLUE. It’s an epic ballad that steadily builds underneath one of Jimmy Barnes’ most soulful performances.

Released late in 2007, OUT IN THE BLUE entered the charts at #3 and quickly became his 10th and latest platinum album.
Much of the album was written while Jimmy recovered from open-heart surgery. ‘Blue Hotel’ fitted that theme.

According to Jimmy, “Neil Finn’s been a friend of mine for such a long time now. We were having dinner one night and he said, ‘I’ve got that song you asked for’. Before he played it for me he said, ‘If you don’t want this song, I’ll write another one. But I think this is very apt because it’s about dealing with a major turmoil whether it’s problems with drugs and alcohol or whether it’s what you’ve just been through with your heart problem. It’s about going through some metamorphosis and coming out the other side a better person for it.’ Then he played me the song and I just loved it, it’s a beautiful, haunting, classic Neil Finn melody.”

OUT IN THE BLUE, his 14th solo album - has seen Jimmy take a new direction – lighter and more spontaneous and intimate. The album was recorded in two weeks with producer Nash Chambers and players Jim Moginie, Mark Punch and Jackie Barnes.
