Halfpast Street Rail Series 07: Event Run Down
Posted: Tue Mar 6, 2007 7:37 pm
What a massive day. Word on the campus was that there hasn't been an event that big at Massey University's Albany campus before.

Charlie Ash was first up and for someone who’d never heard them play before I was surprised with the wicked and often random sound they put out. The Tutts were next up and blasted out an intense 45 minute set before opening up the stage to the break dancing Untitled Crew. I'm not sure how healthy it is to spend more time spinning on your head than just standing up right, but they seem to do alright and the crowd loved them.

Next it was time for the main event - the Snow Jam. The rail setup was a tough down flat down and then onto a picnic table which had Snowplanet’s green rail attached to it. The 20 riders present absolutely ripped it up, despite the sometimes tedious weather conditions and melting snow, there were some fantastic runs. The competition was run in a jam format with the top five riders going through to the final for two more runs.

A few special mentions

1st Place: went to Tom Grooten who seemed to be one of the most consistent riders all day, and when it came down to the final he pulled of the best run. Definitely a well deserved win.

2nd Place: went to Halfpast rider James Hamilton (check him out online @ www.halfpast.co.nz), who literally just got a plane from America. After the event he told me that it was the first time he had hit rails in about
3 months.

3rd Place: went to Leon McKay who had the days highest scoring run in the qualifying jam round as well as a nasty fall where he tried to demolish the top rail with his neck.

Best Bail: Colin Bartlett for attempting to do a flip and landing on his head.

Best Trick: Adam Strawbridge for successfully pulling of a forward flip, even with the lack of a descent kicker.

After a very messy Primo sculling contest the highly anticipated These Four Walls took the stage and they definitely did not disappoint. Of particular note was one of their songs 'Walk Away' which seem to drag people out of all sorts of nooks and crannies to come and watch. You can check them out @ www.myspace.com/these4walls

Finally the boys from Stylus were up and ripped out a wicked hour set. One person commented later to me that even though it was only his second time seeing them their songs were majorly catchy and that he was super keen to go to next gig. So looks like he's driving to Mt Maunganui for the 10th.

About Halfpast

The idea behind Halfpast came about when we were hanging out at a successful friend's house and he asked us what we were doing with ourselves. We told him. He then proceeded to ask, in a not so politically correct way, why we were wasting our lives. Honestly it was a much needed wake up call and hence "Halfpast” was born.

Having looked around what was already in the streetwear market we wanted to create a brand that was simple but still attention grabbing. Something that is very stylish yet turns as many heads as possible. A garment should look good but it should also make a statement about who the person wearing it is.

The next week we gathered our collected savings, a massive two hundred dollars and invested in some t-shirts. From there one thing has lead us to another. Now we’re in four stores in Auckland; our online shop is just days away from completion and our third range is all but done.
