R&V HQ OPENS

Rhythm & Vines has become a homegrown success for the Gisborne region…

The music festival not only brings local, national and international musicians, but it confirms the city as the place to be for New Year’s eve.

On Saturday, December 2, the R&V HQ opens at the Poverty Bay Club, on the corner of Customhouse Street and Childers Road.

With the final line up released last week and the inclusion of international dance act Mylo DJ, tickets to R&V have once again become like gold but there are still a handful of special reserve tickets left.

Meanwhile, for the month it is open, the R&V HQ is a one-stop shop for supplies, information and the internet. It’s an ideal location to catch up with friends and to hang out, plus R&V productions will be launching the upcoming R&V Summer Sessions. That includes a load of talented musicians from around New Zealand. Blackbird will be playing an acoustic set during Saturday afternoon.

In association with Oxfam those keen to be part of the R&V experience in a different way can sign up for voluntary work at the festival. All money raised by the volunteers will go to Oxfam. Check out www.rhythmandvines.co.nz for more information.

RHYTHM & VINES TEAMS UP WITH OXFAM FOR A NZ FIRST

IT IS people power with a message.

Oxfam New Zealand is providing more than a hundred volunteers to help with car parking, ticket entry and hosting at Gisborne’s Rhythm & Vines New Year festival. In return Oxfam will receive a donation to go towards a mutually-agreed project which will help people in the developing world overcome the effects of extreme poverty.

Oxfam Campaign Coordinator Kirsty Wright says such festival stewarding has been hugely successful the world over by other Oxfam affiliates, but it is a first for New Zealand. They are rapt to be the pioneers here. “It is a perfect fit after the massive response we got from Oxjam in October when there were more than 150 music gigs around the country supporting the campaign to Make Poverty History,” says Wright. “We are really excited to be part of a cool event like Rhythm & Vines and are already looking forward to doing more in the future.”

It is a partnership being welcomed by R&V event manager Christine Shanahan who saw how well the concept worked while researching festivals offshore. “We are really pleased to be the first festival in New Zealand to align with Oxfam in this way,” says Shanahan. “It is a win-win situation for all as R&V has a captive audience who can be educated about Oxfam projects.”

Oxfam will also have a team of campaigners at the festival passing out information. Oxfam believes that in a world rich in resources, poverty is an injustice which needs to be addressed. They are striving to achieve a vision of a safer, fairer and more sustainable world where all people can enjoy a life of hope and opportunity.

Oxfam New Zealand works in the Pacific, Asia and Africa enabling people to access safe water and sanitation, build sustainable livelihoods, provide an education and healthcare for their children and live free from persecution and violence. The organization uses campaigning and research to fight for a global agenda that is fair to the world’s poorest people, allowing them the opportunity to live dignified and independent lives.

ANGELS TO FLOAT THROUGH THE CROWDS AT R&V

EXPECT the odd divine experience at Rhythm & Vines this year.
So successful were the House of Breakthrough angels last year, that they
are back….. with twice as many of them this time round.

House of Breakthrough operations director, Lorna Bates says they will have
22 angels – each chaperoned by a security person – floating around the
grounds at Rhythm & Vines.

The Gisborne New Year festival has mushroomed to 15,000 this year – up
3000 on last year.

“We had such a tremendous response about the angels last year,” said Bates.

The angels also made quite an impact on the festival.

“They found a lot of people who needed a helping hand and would quite
often escort them up to the ambulance area if they were in need of first
aid, gave directions, and helped people find their way around the site and
to locate missing friends.”

The angels are easily identifiable by the halos and wings they wear.

House of Breakthrough will also be helping with waste management where
they will have around 40 people split into teams continually sweeping the
venue throughout the festival.

Festival security is something House of Breakthrough has been involved
with for many years. This year at R&V they are doing second line security,
which involves site patrols.

“Our teams are all trained and have worked seven years at Parachute, one
of the country’s largest festivals,” says Bates.

They have helped save lives just by being in the right place at the right
time.

“We do a lot of problem solving… our security men have a friendly yet firm
approach, but they won’t stand for any nonsense. They have that ability to
calm down situations without aggression.”

Bates says the House of Breakthrough congregation gets great satisfaction
in helping festivals like R&V be a success.

“We love being able to help the community – to know that people are having a good yet safe time.”

It is an extension of the work the church does throughout the community
throughout the year.

“Our teams all have fun at R&V,” she says. “They love working with each
other and are good mates. These are people who know how to work together, enjoy their work and have lots of fun doing it.”

All money raised through their work at R&V will be used on projects in the
Gisborne community.

DORIS DE PONT STORY

EDGY Auckland-based designer Doris de Pont shares key qualities with Gisborne New Year festival Rhythm & Vines…. So it is only fitting the two have formed an alliance for the 2006-2007 gathering.

Both like to stand out in a crowd. They share a passion for what they do. Her work is known for its colour, clever cuts and flattering tailoring…

R&V is known for its innovative Kiwi music festival, its holistic approach to a celebration and an ambience that has people clambering to return to. This year de Pont is dressing key members of the R&V team.

R&V special reserve manager Sam Sargent says he particularly wanted de
Pont’s clothes because it was the perfect match.

“She has conveyed such a strong message to the New Zealand fashion world,”

says Sargent. “Her work is of the highest quality and her collections some
of the most elegant in the country.”

The special reserve area is a new-comer to R&V. It is where the celebrities will undoubtedly spend their time, surrounded by plenty of fun, frivolity and beautiful people.

And, not forgetting R&V, it boasts the best views of both stages.

“It is unusual for fashion designers to align themselves with festival, but this is the hottest festival in Australasia, so we like to be a little special.”

The de Pont influence has been an important part of New Zealand’s creative
high fashion design landscape for more than 20 years.

She began in 1985 selling wacky one-off couture creations from a shop in
central Auckland and in more recent years, has been internationally
recognised for merging art and fashion to create totally wearable, yet
unique collections which are sold throughout New Zealand and Australia, as
well as in Japan and parts of Europe.

Each season Doris de Pont takes inspiration from a piece of art to create
collectable prints that make her original clothing so distinctive. She has
staged attention grabbing shows at Air New Zealand Fashion Weeks and
Mercedes Australian Fashion Weeks and her work is recognised as important
by the Auckland Museum and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, which have bought pieces for their permanent collections.
