Cherry To Release Debut Album
Posted: Tue Aug 29, 2006 12:54 pm
Cherry are releasing their debut album, ‘My Love Will Destroy Us’ at a release party on Saturday 16 September at Bodega.

$10 entry includes a copy of the album.

Joining Cherry at their release show will be Volcana, The Dissentors and Gene Kremer.

The ten track album was recorded over 12 months, with songwriter Waren K Thomas recording and playing most of the instrumental and vocal tracks. Although the finished product is more solo than many ‘solo’ albums, it is not.

Because Cherry are a band, with Justin Barr on drums.

The unconventional sound of the album, Waren’s distinctive voice out in front, is reinforced by the boys’ falsettos and framed by primitive instrumentation including ‘treated’ delayed bass guitar and minimalist drums. Lots of handclaps and tambourine in support give the kind of retro edge only found now on very obscure girl group or Joe Meek compilations. The band themselves describe their music as ‘scratchy, dodgy rock n roll for genuine lovers of sweet 60’s pop naivete’.

“That’s lovers as in L.U.V. We play for the people who truly understand where punk rock came from, the sixties and seventies. We play rock and roll, but the emphasis is on the roll.”

During the recording, in between breaks from listening to Ohio Express, The Ronettes and Irma Thomas, Waren decided to learn to play guitar on the tracks as an experiment, which ended up being the tracks that were used.

“Guitar is overrated, he says, bass and keyboards are where it’s at.”

The now sound.

The then sound.

Rewind to the pure, unique sound of Cherry! on the 16th of September at Bodega, and pick up your CD of ‘My Love Will Destroy Us’.

Then you’ll understand.
