Gig venues in Palmy and New Plymouth?
Posted: Fri Jul 14, 2006 1:03 pm
Hey all.

Miss Conduct and Hellserpoppin are wanting to come up to New Plymouth and Palmy north for a weekend of gigs. Probably an All Ages then an R18 on a friday night in palmy, then one in new plymouth.
Any good gig venues for these places?

The Basement Bar in New Plymouth would be the place to go
As for Palmy, you'd need a lot of good luck to find something here - Guv'nors doesn't do gigs anymore unless those gigs guarantee Guvs money (Stylus is playing there on 20 July), but a few bands are now heading out a bit to the Awapuni Tavern

Email me if you want more details ... I might be able to set up some supporting acts for you too if you're interested (and of course if you come to Palmy we'll head along and review it for you)

Cheers

What is the stomach like in Palmy, is that still going? Would you recommend it?

Yep the Stomach is still going strong - I haven't had the chance to go to a gig there yet, but I have heard good things about the place...

Actually, one of the better places I've been to is the Globe Theatre - that place gives out a really good sound and doesn't have the cramped feeling that Guv'nors gives you - otherwise there is the Colusseum behind Highflyers, but I hear it costs a bit to hire that out - the Elemeno P gig there the other week was pretty awesome...

Like I mentioned before though - The Awapuni Tavern seems to be the place to be now... it has a decent stage with plenty of space around it to put your gear, and you could probably get a couple of hundred people in there. The 5Star Fallout/Quarter 2 gig was wicked there, and they had an all ages and R18 gig there. The only disadvantages to going to the Awapuni are the distance it is from town (mabye setting up a bus system could help with that) and you'd also have to bring your own sound system or contact one of the local sound companies... but all that aside it's a pretty decent venue

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is one we discovered the other night - The Break Bar in Palmy.

It's a pool bar, but we saw Stylus there the other night, and it wasn't a pretty good set up.

No permanent stage, so you'll need to bring a lighting rig if you want lights.

Contact details should be on the gig guide (just search for the venue name on the main gig guide page).
