Cheap Thrills!
Posted: Tue Nov 1, 2005 7:51 pm
Coming Soon! The North Shore’s magnificent MASONIC TAVERN will rattle to the sound of three of Auckland‘s most unique bands on Friday 11 November at an event titled CHEAP THRILLS!.

THE RAINY DAYS fronted by principal songwriter Davy G, The Rainy Days first came together in 1992 as their previous incarnation Gestalt evolved. The drummer took the brushes, the guitar and bass went semi-acoustic and the singer took to bellowing through an orange road cone. Sometimes the band has four members, sometimes ten, but since 2003 it's stood at the current four; Dave, Tom, Karin & Aimee with the odd ring-n for recording. The Rainy Days released their latest album ‘Facework’ in October this year on their own label G.I.C.S.N.

THE BOXCAR GUITARS Released their debut EP “Lamp Light” on Arch Hill Recordings in Sept 2005. Over the last year and a bit the Boxcar Guitars have proved to be one of Auckland’s most popular indie alt-country live bands. If you haven’t been lucky enough to see them strumming up a storm supporting the likes of Gomez, & Evan Dando not to mention a whole host of local luminaries ranging from the Checks to the Bats – then it is possible you haven’t left the house recently.

The EP contains five tracks including the radio favourite of “My Love is Blue”, which saw plenty of airplay on the b-net, KiwiFM, Fleet FM and National radio and the more recent bnet hit “Ballad of Madeline Avenue.

THE WHIPPING CATS : They met at art school in 2003 and bonded over Jesus branding, country music and bad comics. The play a sort of broke down blues, that’ll have your feet stomping. Electric Harp, accordion and Harmonica are some of the more unique instrumentation in their arsenal.

CHEAP THRILLS: feat The Rainy Days, The Boxcar Guitars & The Whipping Cats; Friday 11 November; The Masonic Tavern, Devonport; Auckland, $10 doorsales only.

Doors at 8pm, first band at 9pm, all over by midnight.
