Spiritual guidance councillor recommends The Managers

Now, I must admit it did surprise me to see that Auckland based ska rockers, The Managers had named their spring tour around the country The Winter Tour, but on Saturday night I could see why. It was cold, and my little fingers and toes were in need of some much loved warmth so heading out to Ward Lane turned out to be a swell idea – one of the best I’ve come up with in…well…a while, I guess.

When we arrived the place was empty and I started to wonder if anything was actually going to be happening at all! Sadly one of Hamilton’s more popular acts, Dick Dynamite & the Doppelgangers played to a floor that lacked dancers which must have been quite a shock for the lads who usually play to crowds. Never the less they put on a fantastic set playing my favourite tunes off their recently released EP Be my Abductee. Front man, who goes by the name Dick Dynamite, even invited his sister up to sing which was oh so cute and definitely a highlight along with my favourite of the psychobilly group’s songs, Violent Video Games.

The Bludgers were next on the cards who experienced the same rough deal with the dance floor, but it was nice to see the Doppelganger lads getting into the punk-rocky tunes of another of Hamilton’s well known acts. It must also be noted here that there’s always one in the bunch who manages to look like a complete dick, and this time it wasn’t me. The award goes to the little lady who jived so out of time that my team lovingly named her ‘the unbalanced wash machine’…what the hell?! Points for trying lady, but you still looked like an idiot.

In between sets a few more people started to fill the venue which was a much welcomed treat not only for The Managers, but also for us guys who were beginning to wonder what was going on in the city of the future. Alien attack maybe? Whatever it was, it was pretty damn odd for such an awesome line-up!
As soon as the sunshiny band started their set the dance floor filled and we were taken to a beautiful tropical island resort that we so much anticipated at the beginning of the evening…so much so that we even ate ice creams before heading out!

To be honest, I think I could have enjoyed another delicious creamy treat as we swayed to these cuties who started their tight set with a Happy Birthday to one of their sweetest little members sporting a smile and a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses just like I used to own when I was a little girl. She quickly dismissed the song so they could get the show started with Gangska off their album, Take it or Leave it. Bopping in their jeans and tee-shirts this team of eight is really quite colourful to watch and soon had Ward Lane warmed up and ready for the summer that awaits.

Clearly having just as much fun as the rest of us, they got into a few newer songs, Stabbed and Suicide which, when I think about it, are both kinda’ weird names for such a cheerful bunch! Maybe that’s how they can get away with it so easily…charmers. Whatever it is about them, they’re definitely ones to watch, or go out and watch if ya can.
I recommend it, and just so you know, last time I checked I was a spiritual guidance councillor…
