BLOOD BROTHERS
with
THE MINT CHICKS and THIS NIGHT CREEPS

Once upon a time, the Pacific Northwest was only known for incessant rain, 'Louie Louie' and grunge; but that was a lifetime ago. Only the pounding of incessant rain remains, and that's something Auckland can relate to. Right? Right. Here's something else. The Blood Brothers. Four albums into a career of mindful sonic destruction, this frenetic Seattle five-piece will shred any illusions about the current non-united state of America into ribbons, flying the black flag at the Kings Arms on July 19th.

You've seen "the new" punk rock before? Maybe. Don't be fooled though -- this isn't run-of- the-mill, posturing tattooed tough-boy sub-metal that passes itself off as something different. It's not screamo, emo, or pretty-boy adolescent-angst pop. The Blood Brothers are not part of any "wave", they don't look to the early 80s for inspiration, and, as far as we know, have no aspirations to be pop stars. What they are is more difficult to explain: a dual-vocal shriek delivering macabre abstract metaphors over wirey, acidic guitar squalls at a vicious, juddery pace? Certainly. And, according to their latest bio; "a dense field of post-punk land mines triggered by Zappa-like time signatures"; "Americana horror, detailing a squalid landscape dotted with fresh fruit and rotting vegetables"; and "a perfect fix for a dopesick rock scene jonesing for nostalgia and schmaltz". Perfect - trash into trash equals trash-flavoured trash.

Sounds good on paper? Sure, but The Blood Brothers are also a live act with the force of a brick hitting a champagne glass. The live DVD, Jungle Rules, attests to this, but even that is from behind the safety of a TV screen. To really experience The Blood Brothers, you're going to have to be there. They will be joined in this night of wholesome family entertainment by The Mint Chicks and This Night Creeps. Surely The Mint Chicks need no introduction or further explanation. Any questions pertaining to them may be answered by F**k The Golden Youth, out on Flying Nun. As for Hamilton's finest, This Night Creeps, the wise can obtain their just-released second album The Noise Of Music on 1157 Records.

The Blood Brothers' fourth album, Crimes, is out now on V2/FMR.

"If this is the sound of youth decaying, then stick a dead teenager in my ear." - The Village Voice
