Making Music in New Zealand is a book that delves into the reality of being a musician in the local scene. Gareth Shute has used a series of interviews with well-known New Zealand musicians and people in the music industry as the basis of this work, which has resulted in a book that provides a commanding depth of knowledge. It will appeal to those seeking a career in music and those who are simply interested in finding out more about music in New Zealand and the musicians that create it.

Musicians interviewed include: Shayne Carter, Anika Moa, Shelton Woolright (Blindspott), Chris Knox, Matt Harvey and Evan Short (Concord Dawn), Baitercell and Schumacher, P-Money, Savage, Anika Moa, Don McGlashan, Toby Laing (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Kirsten Morrell (Goldenhorse), Ruban Nielson (The Mint Chicks), Jon Toogood (Shihad) – to name only a few. The chapter headings follow:

Biography of Gareth Shute

Gareth Shute recently won a Montana Book Award in the Lifestyle and Contemporary Culture category for his book Hip Hop Music in Aotearoa and is heavily involved in the Auckland music scene, both as a musician and as a journalist. He currently performs in two bands: The Tokey Tones and Ryan McPhun and The Ruby Suns. Both these bands are associated with Lil Chief Records and he also helps out with the day-to-day running of the label.

He has written articles for a number of local magazines, including: NZ Musician, A Low Hum, Staple, and Back2Basics. along with the publication of his previous book, Hip Hop Music in Aotearoa. He is a big supporter of local music, in all its popular forms.

Gareth has also written fiction and had a number of short stories published in various local publications. He also does volunteer work at the Auckland City Mission.
