RECORDING TIPS
Posted: Wed Mar 23, 2005 11:42 am
Hey guys,

Just thought i might put out a few pointers for the up and coming bands out there. I do alot of writing for muzic.net.nz as an event/cd/single reviewer.
I have reviewed alot of awesome bands lately - and want to give people some ideas to work from.

Its always good to get recordings done of your band - so that you can hear what you sound like, rip your songs to shreds, and make them better.
Be picky - make a list of every single thing you can find wrong with your band and do what you can to correct it - with personal playing, and the songs.

I have noticed that alot of bands are paying out money for sub-standard recordings.

There are a few different thoughts on this - but i wanted to share my opinion from personal experience - and what i am seeing.

Sure - go ahead and pay a bit of money to record a few demo tracks if you like, to try and score gigs etc - but most places now book without having heard you in the first place. Most record companies wont take notice of a half pie demo that sounds decidedly average. I would suggest not wasting too much time with low quality cheap recordings - they are good for improving your songs, and getting your mates to have a quick listen, but not too much else.

After you have been around a little while, definitely make the investment to record properly through a reputable studio - to single quality.
The cost varies from about $2500, through to $5K for a single - there is no way of getting around this. You pay for what you get.

The benefits of having a good quality recording are HUGE. If the song is good, but you have a bad quality recording, media wont accept it. It will never make radio, and never make TV if the recording quality is sub-standard.

If you ARE going to spend the money and do a proper single, make sure you get it MASTERED. dont skimp - spend the extra hundred or two hundred to make it stand out - and make sure you back it up. Don't even bother thinking that you will make the money back from the recording, because you wont - simple as that. Promote it HARD - give recordings away to friends, rip it to mp3 and email it to anyone that wants a listen. Send it to every station you know - and take advantage of the NZ On Air Indie Hit Discs etc. Make it worth your while having spent the money. Too many bands are not pushing there good recordings.

If you follow those guidelines - im sure you will have some success - and will be noticed alot more off a good recording.

Dont stop there though - once the ball is rolling, roll with it, do follow up recordings, and music videos to promote. It will cost you HEAPS, but its worth it if you want to succeed.

Cheers guys.
