Music Videos

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think the music videos on TV at the moment for some genres of music are really going downhill. After watching Select on TV over the last few days I have come to the following conclusions:

Rap/RnB/Hip Hop/Reggae etc:
These videos are generally the main singer surrounded by their entourage. If it's a male singer they are usually surrounded by a group of sexy, black females wearing next to nothing and dancing around, shaking all their body bits. If it's a female singer they are usually either dancing with other females wearing next to nothing etc, or they are surrounded by a group of sexy muscular men who dance close to them... In my opinion these videos are boring- it's the same thing over and over again and there's nothing interesting in the whole video to look at. Sure some people will enjoy looking at sexy males or females dancing around, but I just don't find this interesting for an entire video. It's ok for some of the video, but not all of it.

Pop/Pop Rock:
These videos either focus on nothing but the singer, or they focus on the singer singing and the band playing their instruments. Again, very boring- however there are always exceptions to this.

And finally Metal/Rock etc:
These videos are much more interesting with some sort of story line to follow. Unlike the above videos which show the same thing over and over again, almost every single Metal/Rock video is completely different and unique. Some of these bands only focus on the band playing but most don't. There's too many examples to mention, but how about The Rasmus with their videos, all are different with a storyline to follow.

Regardless of what genre of music you like (because I personally couldn't care less if you think rap is better than metal and vice versa) I'm curious to know what you think about this- aren't the videos for Metal and Rock bands much more interesting to watch than videos for Rap and Pop bands?

I know I didn't catch all the genres in this, but you get the general idea.

i agree about pop rocks focusing on singers,. gettin mighty annoying isnt it?

rap/hip hop videos have always been about half naked peeps and guns anyway. that has never really changed over the years,

metal/rock however seems kinda wierd nowadays. Most of them are interesting, like 8 foot sativa's "believer", korn's "freak on a leash" and breaking benjamin's "so cold"
some new videos however, are really wierd,...not too cool, like a perfect circle's "the outsider". i love the song, but the video reminds me of a hip hop video, which sucks and it doesnt really go according to what the song is about.
another one would be metallica's "frantic". Metallica seems to have gone new school since st anger, and so did their videos. I mean, compare the interesting-ness of "one" with "frantic". Im sure some might get the point here. Its kinda hard to explain.

I fully agree with this...focusing on just the singer is boring...and the stuff about the genres and that, thats all true too....

With hiphop, they wear nothing but....nothing....well, most of them vidz. And rock...i dunno, I dont think ive watchd a whole rock video, but its catchy I guess...some of it Confused

I dont really watch punk or metal....but I hope I catch onto it if I do watch it

the focus on the lead singer in music videos is just getting a bit over the top... it makes you fee bad for the rest of the group who are maybe cut in and out of the clip a couple of times....

I totally agree with you about the rap/hip hop videos. They are also pushing a foreign culture in NZ. I personally find them offensive.

Lead singers: It's always been the way to focus on lead singers. I don't know why and I find it annoying. Even way back before videos when bands simply featured on TV shows - it was exactly the same.

Anyway, my overall impression of videos over the years is that they are primarily a tool to divert your attention from a rubbish song.
