Sorry had to write again... so poo poo platter, is music defined by playing an instrument? Is that why hip hop doesn't rate on your musical radar?

The cynic says Hip hop is music
as is hi five
bagpipe toting scotsmen
and the song with the alligator on the video
the ketchup song
the macarena
and the bay city rollers.

some music is good
and some music is crap

Hip hop is crap
a personal opinion

some 3 year olds will disagree with me that hi five are fucking awful
that is their opinion
and even then they are much easier on the eye than Kanye West
they would still be wrong
you are wrong

I win.

dude u cant wipe off a whole genre and say its crap!! have u even tried listening to some underground stuff?cos it takes ALOT of talent to rap and do all that stuff and some of their lyrics are actually worth while. i think that alot of people are too narrow minded when it comes to hiphop because of being used to whats on the radio and tv. but you have to remember that MAINSTREAM is CRAP not hiphop.

no, its what sets apart good music and bad music. like, most rock bands play their own instruments whereas boybands and hip hoppers usually dont

To me, I don't care. I don't care if they play their own instruments, or sing their own songs, or even write their own songs. As long as it sounds good, I'll listen. I mean geeze I listened to about 5 albums the other day; Radiohead, Westlife, Salmonella dub, Enya and the Sex Pistols.

I think they're all great artists with good music. I'm pretty sure Westlife don't write their own songs, Enya composes but doesn't write the lyrics. And Radiohead, Salmonella Dub and Sex Pistols all do their own stuff.

Open your mind dude.

I have encountered cynic before and he is an incomplete baffoon with too much to talk about and nothing to say. Perhaps he has difficulties with with socialising because 'everybody's wrong'.

Go cynic

people who dont write their own music make me sick. how can you sing(with feeling) about something that means nothing to you, and get all the credit for it? there has to be a certain depth to the music, and it has to be real, like what the ARTIST is feeling. as far as instruments go...i guess i like people better if they play their own instruments, i dunno why, it just makes them seeem cooler, and they have to work harder!

I am reminded of the story that, when filming Marathon Man, Dustin Hoffman prepared for a chase scene by sitting up all night in a bath full of ice. He comes in the next day looking like shit and suffering from hypothermia.
"What happened?" asks co- star Laurence Olivier.
Hoffman tells the story and how it has gotten him into character.
Olivier replies "but my dear boy it is called acting for a reason"

I think something similar can be said for delivering someone else's words. Sometimes it is relating to and sometimes you have to act.

Carpentry, the cynic has lots of friends, he is only disagreeable to people who like hip hop and Americans who didn't vote for Ralph Nader.
Go and look at his spiels on nzmusic.com
That said, fucked if I know who he is, he could be some spotty faced kid who sits at a computer all day and writes shit between gigs playing bass in shitty cheating hip hop 'bands'. Then again I could be wrong.

Just to get back to the focus of this thread -who is NZ's hottest artist? I'd have to say it would be Breaks Co-op. Definitively for me, a group of men worthy of watching for greatness. I have to admit to slight bias, being family. Having said that, I didn't buy the last album 8 years ago - I don't know that I even heard much of it until recently. "the sound inside" however, is a different matter altogether. It really is a beautiful album - and this from someone who is over 40. Everyone who has heard it raves about it. I hope you all enjoy it - I know I have not inconsiderable pride in knowing that the same creative genes that run through my brother are there in me somewhere!

Matty J ruys, aka the guy who brought us K'Lee and, I understand wrote all her stuff. I'm informed he had something to do with Brooke Fraser getting her break. If you are in your mid to late 20s you might remember him as a R&B styled solo artist who had a bit of a hit with 'Cruising' (you know, the huey Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow song from the movie duets) he was also the guy who showed up to that blind date show in the eighties (with David Jamieson and Suzy Aitken) as a mime.
Don't think he'd know a lot bout ghettos.

sometimes to play some one elses song is a pleasure equal to that of playing one of your own creations, and having it come out as dreamed.
musicians should express their soul in music, and not just aproach it like a job, and plan every move based on the ideal on how it will best fill the bank account.

ok, I'm not sure what that's got to do with anything but, why not. It's fun doing covers.

If it is a job you have to approach it as a job though that doesn't mean you should go with what brings in the most dollars- just that if you don't act in a professional way you end up dicking people around. That professionalism should mean going for the money, I wouldn't necessarily say the two are synonomous. My personal opinion of Matty J is that he seems a very business savvy guy and that he spotted a good money maker in K'lee. That he showed up on a dating show as a mime, a little suspect. That he had his biggest hit from a cover that presumably was a song he liked- great. Van Halen practically own 'You really got me' post their version of it, Gary Moore's best work, by and large were covers (Shapes of things to come, don't let me be misunderstood, need your love so bad), the Ataris version of boys of summer kicks arse even though I reckon they should've recorded to a click. I'd argue that Zed's best musical output have been covers.

dude, give me an idea what I'm supposed to be arguing with you about here as I'm finding it hard to see what it is you're supposed to be challenging.
