Also, blaming it on the download market is a pretty dumb call, I think that most people would be willing to pay money for music they think is worth it

Think again mate, EVERYBODY I know who has the internet spends hours downloading illicit mp3s. Free albums by any artist you can imagine at your fingertips, who wouldn't jump on that? Not that I'm condoning it, but kids these days want everything, they want it quick, and they want it free.

That's true, K.I.N.G., but the guys at sounds shouldn't be blaming it on mp3 downloads as there ARE people out there who would actually like collecting cds and are suckers for cd artwork (like yours truly), and besides, the cd&dvd store seems to be doing quite well, there's probably still a market for non-downloaders (ie grandmas and anti-techies, to be blunt). However I wouldn't mind admitting that cds would become obsolete in the next decade or so, or even in five years.

I'm the same mate, I have 1000+ CD's... mostly from Real Groovy and online purchases (from distributors, Amazon.com and Ebay).. I'm all about pre-booking new releases and getting all the bonus collectable stuff with it, be it a postcard or a shirt.

But mp3 downloads have DEFINATELY made a dent in CD sales.

Where Sounds failed, was in their range (or lack of it) of choice, and their "discount" stuff was all SHITE... Irish pub drinking songs, the best of Boney M, garbage like that you can get for $3 in the Warehouse bargain bins.

The CD store seem to do better because of their specials, when I go past their $10-$20 bin there's ALWAYS something I want. And I'm a picky c*nt!

If CD's become obsolete, I'll have to rebuild my collection Sad which is probably around $25,000-$30,000 worth of music. They'll end up like my records, up in the spare room looking cool but never being played.

While CDs could become obsolete, their contents can't. Just format shift to some digital format while you can. FLAC is good for this.

Oh wait, that's currently illegal. It's illegal to format shift in NZ. Hear that, all you mp3 player users that have copied your stuff from CDs onto your player? You're just as bad as the evil, downloading scum... in the eyes of the law No, No!

The good thing is, there is a bill passing through Parliament at the moment (at the pace of snail) which will correct this.

But, legal or not, I would seriously consider backing up all of your music into some digital format. Especially the stuff you can't buy any more - you can't replace it if something happens to it.

I can't wait until MP3 is replaced by something lossless, like OGG or something.

Even at really high bitrates I can still hear the compression (mind you, I've been a working musician on and off for 15 years now).

One day, when I've got a massive external hard drive, I'm gonna systematically rip EVERYTHING. Singles included.

I've started doing mine, but it's a huge undertaking... and my collection isn't as big as yours! Disk storage is cheap.

I'm using FLAC:

Quote:

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality.

http://flac.sourceforge.net/

File sizes are a lot bigger than MP3, but you can't complain about the quality.

Ogg Vorbis is still a lossy format, like MP3.

I know Raw Records in New Plymouth stocks plenty of local stuff im just pissed off about all cds togeva and dat, coz theres only two good stores in new plymouth really (this means only NP not the rest of da naki that dnt got cds stores, apart from straty of course with crossroads) and only missing links not that great on the whole size and selection thing so raw records are good at supplying local acts, mainstream and "big" worldwide acts etc, but wen i ordered a children of bodom cd they took bout 2 whole months and ended up getn me children of bodom but in the end was the wrong album, they offered to try again but i was just like Shock "na im gud ill take it! thanks!" least they ended up givn me 5 dollars off nxt time i go there

That's a pretty disappointing experience really. If I'm buying import stuff, I just get it off www.amazon.com.

I'm a little confused if recording companies a struggling against the downloads and I'm talking the Illegal Downloads which everybody seems to do then won't the bands struggle as there music is not leading to money and profit?

Yeah the band gets bugger all in the hand from CD sales. You've gotta be actively touring, recording, selling merch, the whole shabang... most bands that you'd consider successful are pretty much on an average wage. That's why you get guys doing ads in magazines hawking signature gear and clothes etc.

Is it not suspicious that other chains are still doing ok, yet Sounds is failing? Bad staffing is the problem. Ever try asking a Sounds staff member about anything?
