Do you guys reckons it's up to par with stuff from the states? I don't mean as comparing to shit like 50 cents and the game. But as compared to Lupe Fiasco, Immortal technique and the roots.

i can't stand hip hop but i reckon NZ artists have their own sound compared to US hip hoppers, like you listen to nesian mystik, che fu n shit like that it's more straight forward, no effects n shit not so fake sounding. So i reckon NZs stuff is better

Quit being so narrow minded. As much as I dislike hip hop, it's still a genre of music and deserves just as much respect as any other genre.

Laughing No, No!

Rubbish.

All music is valid.

What's a "computar"? Laughing

The computErs don't WRITE the music.... geez... the ignorance these days No, No!

Che Fu and King Kapisi are amazing. NZ hip-hop has its own thing going on. I just hope we can keep all the bling and gangsta bullshit out of it. Leave that up to those black guys in america who have a chip on their shoulder and have to wave all their bling around to prove they can roll in cash like a big fat white man too.

We have substituted oversized t-shirts and stiff brimmed hats for that. I must say, wearing your hat like that doesn't make for optimum sun protection.

They don't buy their bling here.

They shoplift it.

Hmm the whole hip hop thing comes up again... Yeah its music, not something I like at all, still it is music. When you hear the likes of Kanye West ripping off relatively obscure composers like Domenico Scarlatti in some of his hooks (probably coincidental but still.check out the refrain in Sonata in E minor, Longo 352...) you can't invalidate it as not music. it is either music you like, music you don't care about or music you hate. Typically I am in the don't care about, leaning towards hate camp. Very Happy

Something that does interest me is the concept of the colour of music.... you can't deny rap as black urban music but I have to wonder what people think re: the music's 'colour' and the people doing it...
ie. if rap is black then presumably rock is white music? Does that make Jimi Hendrix a white guy or Eminem black? Is there a presumption of wannabe black or white guy to either?

Likewise take a singer as typically 'white' as Steve Perry from Journey (the guy is actually Portugese but I'd say 99.9% of people with Journey cds are middle aged, middle class white folk who make a habit of driving S.U.Vs and bobbing side to side, inebriated, at christmas parties and calling it dancing Mr Green ). When he bases the majority of his singing style on Sam Cooke, arguably the father of modern R&B singing, is there any validity in saying that music has colour?

I can't help but think there is always a cultural viewpoint when people sing about their experiences and the world around them but does it translate into the music itself?
