Big Day Out 2007 Lineup announced!

Press Releases
1st ANNOUNCEMENT !!

6-10-2007
Hello everyone, how's your year been?

It's time for the BIG DAY OUT 2007 first announcement, which means summer must be just around the corner.

2006 was pretty over the top. Considering how big the shows were it's great that everyone kept it together. Creating a world class, safe event is always our priority & we need everyone's help to deliver the shows you not only expect, but deserve.

For 2007 we searched the globe for just the right acts to come and hang out with everyone. It is after all the world's biggest travelling summer camp. Let's hope we all get along, have fun & hear some great music along the way. You are of course all welcome to stay back and help clean the dishes if you want.

Melbourne had a great venue this year, but sadly, there is no venue at this point in time for the Melbourne leg of the tour. We will keep you informed about the Melbourne venue as time continues.

We are positive that the Big Day Out will return to Melbourne.

As usual more acts and entertainment will be announced later, but for now here is our first RSVPs for the 2007 party.

All the best

Ken West & Vivian Lees

BIG DAY OUT is proud to announced that for the first time ever at the BIG DAY OUT that TOOL will be paying the BIG DAY OUT a visit. This is their first visit to Australia since their last visit in 2001. Having released 5 albums since their beginnings and most rececently, the aweseome '10,000 DAYS' album, which defied record sales and debuted at Number 1 on the charts both here and in the states.
With the powerful vocal stylings of Maynard James Keenan to the almost tribal like drum beats of Danny Carey, there is no mistaking and no resisting the sound of TOOL, direct from California to BIG DAY OUT.

BIG DAY OUT is rolling out the red carpet to herald the arrival of experimental rock royalty – MUSE. "Starlight", "Super Massive Black Holes – MUSE dangerous and sometimes electrified set is something not to be missed. Last visiting the BIG DAY OUT in 2004, we are met with the band, featuring the brand new album 'Black Holes and Revelations'

"Somebody Told Me", was the first single released by THE KILLERS on their critically acclaimed debut album 'Hot Fuss'. BIG DAY OUT is thrilled to have THE KILLERS along for the ride. Universally acclaimed as the album of late 2003, THE KILLERS debut selling millions of copies world wide. Here to showcase their brand new album 'Sams Town', It's more dramatic, more emotional, more three dimensional. Not just new wave, THE KILLERS offer a new world: rock music with style, sexual intrigue, smarts, and more plenty of room for dancing. They've conquered the world – what chance does the BIG DAY OUT stand?

After a little break from the public eye, American rock band GUNS 'N' ROSES pay a flying visit to the BIG DAY OUT. With a new lineup and some former G'N'R members following along for the ride, Axl Rose has almost completed the long awaited album 'Chinese Democracy'. Gracing the covers of rock magazines across the globe, selling millions of albums and then gracing newspapers across the world. With hits such as 'Mr. Brownstone', 'Sweet Child Of Mine', 'Paradise City' and a nice little cover of Sir. Paul's 'Live and Let Die', the band is sure not to dissapoint. Please stand and applaud for the return of GUNS 'N' ROSES to Australia.

No strangers to the BIG DAY OUT, we are delighted to herald the return of the FOO FIGHTERS in 2007 . Led by former Nirvana sticksman, Dave Grohl, the FOO FIGHTERS have taken music to new frontiers over 5 mind-blowing albums, including "In Your Honor" . More than just a live show, the FOO FIGHTERS are an experience not to miss. Showcasing the softer side of their album 'In Your Honor', the FOO FIGHTERS will be joined onstage with former touring guitarist for Nirvana, Pat Smear. Even in accoustic mode, the FOO FIGHTERS still know how to rock and tell a good story or two in the mean time.

Pull out your eyeliner, dye your hair black: the BIG DAY OUT gets dark in 2007 by welcoming for the first time to the BIG DAY OUT MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, better known simply as MCR. Having toured in 2005 with punk rock legends Green Day, the young and upcoming group are creating a storm wherever they travel. With a new album to be released in February next year, expect MCR to play some new material, as well as their classics, MCR will sing it and mean it at the BIG DAY OUT this summer.

Melbournes own JET will bring the rock music thumping back to BIG DAY OUT. After close to 4 million copies of the debut album 'GET BORN', Nic, Chris, Cam and MarkJanet have been producing anthems of provocative, urbane, enraged, noisy, angular punk rock. Their latest, "Shine On", is their most challenging effort yet, taking the foursome into panoramic new territory. Always a formidable live force, JET are a band we're proud to welcome back to the BIG DAY OUT.

Indie kids and pop lovers rejoice! Those well-travelled London purveyors of magnificent melodies, THE MAGIC NUMBERS put a smile on the dial of all those who were lucky enough to witness their BIG DAY OUT debut in 2006. The unusual four-piece combo of brother and sister Romeo and Michele Stodart and brother and sister Sean and Angela Gannon, THE MAGIC NUMBERS' self-titled debut album is all country soul, West Coast harmonies and melancholic joy. As a live act, they've got a reputation for inspiring awed silence, squeals of joy, and Cheshire cat grins. Winter is over and THE MAGIC NUMBERS' unique brand of musical sunshine is headed your way.

Fronted by DJ/Producers Ivan Gough and Grant Smilie, TV ROCK are a rock band with a difference – they can rock a mosh-pit and a dancefloor. The band's debut single 'Flaunt It' is a swirling mass of funked-out basslines, electric psychedelics, driving guitars and leftfield loops. Selling out shows around the Australia and overseas and a tour with pop outfit Rogue Traders that left punters, chin-strokers and ravers gyrating uncontrollably to their own style of block rocking beats.

French party-rocker BOB SINCLAR, the mastermind behind the major hit 'Love Generation' has taken the world of dance by storm. No stranger to the mixing desk, BOB SINCLAR has been at it since the early 80's then specialising in funk and hip-hop music. BOB SINCLAR's newest release 'Western Dreams' has spawned a new legion of fans world wide, with hits including 'World Hold On', 'Love Generation' and 'Rock This Party', make sure you have your dancing shoes on when BOB SINCLAR gets the party started.

DADDY COOL were an instant hit with Australian audiences in the 70s, and the BIG DAY OUT hails the first appearance of one of this country's most loved rock bands to BIG DAY OUT. Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album, Ross Wilson, Ross Hannaford, Wayne Duncan and Gary Young will dish out one helluva blistering set of surging rock anthems this summer when they play the BIG DAY OUT.

Melbourne's secret band TISM made a name for themselves by performing in disguises whilst onstage. Established as a joke band who were willing to take risks in the recording studio, their live show translated perfectly and has always been lauded as an unpredictable must see. Don't miss TISM, daring to push the envelope of joyous and chaotic noise nationally in 2007.

With killer rhymes, irresistible beats and a wicked sense of humour, XZIBIT has toured with some of the world's biggest names including Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre and is considered by most to be the a legend in rap music. XZIBIT's slick observational MC-ing style is a style of no other that serves up a musical movie for your mind. Recently XZIBIT has been hosting TV shows, Music Awards ceremonies and laying down tracks for an upcoming album. XZIBITS last visit to BIG DAY OUT was a memorable one. Don't miss it.

Hailed as one of the worlds best, love metal band HIM will be visiting BIG DAY OUT for the first time and Australia for the second time in their history. HIM return to Australia for their very first BIG DAY OUT. Led by poster boy Ville Valo, fans are set for a unbelievable show, belting out hard rock tunes and the occasional ballad. For over 6 years now, the lads from Finland have delivered the most energetic, down and dirty live gigs you'll ever hope to see. You may never know, they might even bring a few sporting friends along for the ride (Aus Only)

They've played some of the biggest festivals in the world, and in 2006 FRENZAL RHOMB return to join the national BIG DAY OUT line up. Hard-core Punk music is their specialty.Jay and the Doctor currently hosting the breakfast shift on Triple J, the lads will have a short break whilst they tour for BIG DAY OUT. With anthems such as 'Punch in the Face', 'You Are Not My Friend', 'Russel Crowe' and many more fun sing-a-longs, be sure to get ready for some serious fun with FRENZAL RHOMB (Aus Only)

New kids on the block THE VASCO ERA will step up for the BIG DAY OUT in 2007, bringing along their hallowed, catchy brand of blues music with them. Their unforgettable blues riffs and gravel like vocals make their shows astounding. The press have jumped all over THE VASCO ERA, claiming they can do a White Stripes medely better than the White Stripes. Playing at the Melbourne leg of BIG DAY OUT in 2005, the band takes a step up touring for BIG DAY OUT nationally. Make up your own mind at the 2007 BIG DAY OUT (Aus Only)

Sydney band THE LOST GOSPEL has struck a chord with fans of rock and roll around the nation. And how! THE LOST GOSPEL's debut album "According To..." has been well received with sold out gigs in all regions. Fronted by Grinspoon member Phil Jamieson and with Stevie Wright's son Nick on the gutiar, THE LOST GOSPEL will make playing music look like childs play. (Aus Only)

We welcome Sydneysiders YOUTHGROUP who will bring their eclectic tunes on the national BDO tour for the second time. Delivering their acclaimed third album "Casino Twilight Dogs" in 2006, YOUTHGROUP navigate their way across varied landscapes of pop, folk and indie rock terrain with emotive vocals and captivating lyrics. Tune in to YOUTHGROUP at the BIG DAY OUT for a sophisticated slice of summer rock. (Aus Only)

Scavenging their way to success with sheer determination and swag of talent, WOLF & CUB have set themselves apart from the Adelaide scene with a unique take on electro-noise rock and have found themselves on the BIG DAY OUT bus for 2007. Taking cues from the greats - Primal Scream, early Verve, The Fall, WOLF & CUB will take you there and back again with their hypnotic, psychotic, melodic live show at the BIG DAY OUT. (Aus Only)

Stay tuned for our next announcement, when we'll reveal the latest editions to the BDO party guestlist…

I'm not sure where the list above came from either, but it appears to have a few "additions" over and above what was annouced this morning.

GNR and Foo Fighters for example, are both no goes...

We'll post the official release when it's available.

Official 1st Announcement (NZ)

Welcome to the official... official 2007 Big Day Out first announcement.

Now that everyone has had their fun & had a go at their own announcements’ it is finally our turn. That is of course if you believe that this is the actual official first announcement.

So for those of you who are true believers read on.....

We hoped you liked the show in 2006: wasn’t Iggy great?

For us it’s not just about great music but offering a great experience as well. Not only for the audience but the bands and of course the team that makes the shows a reality.

2007 will be the 15th year of the BDO. Over that time we have witnessed amazing performances from artists ranging from the obscure to the megastars. We of course intend to continue that tradition.

That said, we felt it was time to turn up the volume for 2007.

A big show also means you need to take extra care of each other, pace yourself, play safe and get home in one piece. Please don’t forget about the getting home safely part of the day.

So, no more lectures, it’s meant to be fun.

The first announcement packs a lot of punch and we would recommend buying your tickets early. Rest assured, the second and third announcements will only reconfirm your decision.

So lets get to the actual real official, official first announcement.

BIG DAY OUT 2007 will host the heaviest modern metal experience of all, TOOL. After 15 years of breaking, shaking and earthquaking new musical ground, TOOL topped the charts in 2006 with their latest unique melding of art, prog and metal, 10,000 Days. With an unmercifully heavy set that reaches back over a decade to the still staggering Sober, BIG DAY OUT 2007 will feel the earth move under its feet as TOOL rumble and roar into life.

In the summer of 2004, JET wowed BDO audiences with blistering sets showcasing their worldwide smash debut Get Born. Sure, it was only rock‘n’roll, but we liked it! In 2007, JET return to the BIG DAY OUT stage with their new effort, Shine On, a rollicking LP jam-packed with rootsy Delta blues, British hard-rock and Everly Brothers inspired harmonies. Expect a show packing a swaggering rock‘n’roll punch as a new light shines on JET at the BDO. (ALL SHOWS)

Direct from outer space, BIG DAY OUT 2007 is thrilled to welcome the most thrilling operatic sci-fi carnival on the face of the earth, MUSE. The fuel powering this prog rock missile from Mars is Black Holes and Revelations, a No.1 album around the world, and a showcase of a band at the top of their game – a game no one else has ever dared dream of playing. In 2007, BIG DAY OUT will be ridiculous, overblown, ambitious and utterly brilliant – all thanks to the one and only MUSE.

In the beginning, there was the BIG DAY OUT. And in the beginning of the BIG DAY OUT, there was VIOLENT FEMMES. Fifteen years after they folk-punked the BIG DAY OUT into existence alongside some little band called Nirvana, VIOLENT FEMMES are back to reclaim what’s rightfully theirs. BIG DAY OUT 2007 will ring to the sounds of the FEMMES classics that have become part of the rock’n’roll fabric: Add it Up. Blister in the Sun. Kiss Off. Gone Daddy Gone. Gimme the Car. American Music… VIOLENT FEMMES at BIG DAY OUT: a rite of passage no self-respecting music fan can miss.

When SCRIBE first stepped up to ask the question “How many dudes do you know flow like this?” in his smash hit Not Many, this young New Zealand rapper was setting out on a crusade to bring a new flavour to the international hip-hop scene. The real deal alternative to gun-toting, bling-laden cash hip-hop, SCRIBE’s powerful stage presence, hard hitting, hook-laden rhymes are irresistible and have inspired all corners of the hip-hop community to wax lyrical. (ALL SHOWS)

BIG DAY OUT 2007 is buzzing about the arrival of the best band to come from anywhere, ever – THE KILLERS. The Las Vegas band, led by the “knicker-wettingly debonair” Brandon Flowers, sold 5 million copies of their debut album Hot Fuss, and delivered some of the best singles of the 2000s so far: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me and Smile Like You Mean It. Now comes the new album, Sam’s Town, and a live show renowned for causing mass singalongs and hormonal hysteria. With the coming of THE KILLERS, BIG DAY OUT 2007 is going to be, well, killer.

Everyone’s favourite Fremantle prodigies ESKIMO JOE run away to join the BIG DAY OUT circus this summer with their third album Red Wine and Black Fingernails in tow. With throbbing drums, warm keyboard atmospheres and ethereal guitars, the Eskies are wildly charismatic showmen with sex appeal to boot. Not afraid of a little rock‘n’roll they are not to be missed at BDO 2007. (ALL SHOWS)

BIG DAY OUT 2007 gets back in black with the coming of MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE. Beloved by black-clad music fans everywhere for their incendiary hits I’m Not Okay (I Promise), Helena and The Ghost of You, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE are set to leave the pretenders choking in their dust with their new, epic concept album The Black Parade. Led by an iconic performer in Gerard Way, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE will put the pomp and punk pageantry into BIG DAY OUT 2007.

BIG DAY OUT 2007 has a warm, fuzzy feeling now that PEACHES is returning to rub us up the right way. The self-made, self-produced, do-it-yourself leader of the electro punk movement and high priestess of the dirty lyrical classic comes armed with her third album, Impeach My Bush. Having let this Canadian whirlwind have her way with us several times before, it is with a sense of exhilaration and palpable danger that BIG DAY OUT 2007 announces the return of PEACHES.

EVERMORE have come a long way since the initial release of their impressive album debut Dreams; after a phenomenal season of touring on the live circuit, winning hearts in Oz and overseas, the three Hume brothers picked up a swag of awards and found themselves with a multi-platinum selling record. In 2006 EVERMORE have returned with a new album Real Life and we welcome them to the BIG DAY OUT for the first time, to deliver their dynamic rock, melodic harmonies and uplifting lyrics. (ALL SHOWS)

Get ready to shake ya ass. SPANK ROCK will bring the party, the rhythms and the raunch to BIG DAY OUT 2007. Hyped by DJs from Freq Nasty to Laurent Garnier, some call SPANK ROCK the figureheads of a sound known as Baltimore Club. We just call ‘em funny, catchy, clever, fearless and most of all, innovative. Representin’ their debut set, YoYoYoYoYo, Baltimore’s SPANK ROCK will be doing fresh, funky and filthy things with hip hop at BIG DAY OUT 2007.

SHAPESHIFTER’s new album Soulstice propelled the Christchurch via Melbourne drum’n’bassers to the giddy heights of number four in the NZ album charts on its release in September. Not that being giddy or high is anything new for fans of the most exciting live d’n’b act downunder - SHAPESHIFTER have lifted the roof off the Boiler Room at several Big Day Outs in the past and so we just had to have them back. Soulstice is a star-packed jam that shows how this group’s sound has evolved to transcend genre definition, taking elements from jazz, latin, reggae, soul, rock, hip hop and electronica, and blending them live into a truly diverse and overwhelming dancefloor experience.

“We must make things as terrifying and exciting as they can be” is the call to arms from Finn Andrews as he moves into a higher gear with his second VEILS album, Nux Vomica. Existing between Auckland and London, where he signed with the legendary Rough Trade label in the UK as a teenager, Finn’s always been poised as a singer-songwriter superstar in the making. Now with a new band line-up and an astonishing album of quality tunes, he is ready to turn things on for us on the Big Day Out stage. We see a young Nick Cave in the making and we’re thrilled to have THE VEILS join us.

Yes it is true THE MINT CHICKS took to the front of the stage with a chainsaw on their last Big Day Out appearance. But with an arsenal that extends way beyond props, somersaults and on-stage open warfare into a visceral musicality that makes them one of the best two bands in New Zealand right now (you can choose the other one yourself) these guys are so proven as no one-trick ponies that we’re not bothering to install x-ray machines and metal detectors for their return. Their new Flying Nun album, Crazy? YES! Dumb? NO! – their second – is so damn excitingly good that we don’t feel like saying anything more, except what singer Kody Neilson said in the bio – “don’t cut your wrists/you’ve got beautiful fists”.

We’ve heard it said that the future sound of breaks, beats and electronica nestles on the beguiling shiny plastic of MINUIT’s two albums on the independent Tardus label. And having checked in with their latest, The Guards Themselves, we’re true believers. The three piece fronted by the enigmatic Ruth Carr offer something unique in the world of electronic dance music – while the black cabs pump out the deep bass and twittering tops, MINUIT also bring real personality and a sometimes fragile sense of song to the affair. Pop music that’s intentionally modern has never made the future sound so alluring as this group.

Vinyl addicted soul providers OPENSOULS are a collective of musicians who regularly crop up playing alongside everyone from Anika Moa and Che Fu to verse 2 and Recloose. Get them into the studio or onstage as OPENSOULS though and this nine-piece band cook an instant hip-hop fusion of all that is based on the good groove… if you are looking for a fresh take on DJ Spinna, The Roots, Sharon Jones, Fela Kuti, Talib Kweli or Alice Russell, make sure you’ve put a big red circle around the OPENSOULS in your Auckland Big Day Out schedule.

Auckland’s electro-rock sensations THE TUTTS have set out with the verve of dancefloor evangelists to move crowds in their hometown this year. Sweaty club gigs week in, week out have earned them a fervent following while THE TUTTS’ first single “K” has put a high voltage pulse through national airwaves and TV stations. Picked out by everyone as the one to watch from the current crop of smart rockers about town, THE TUTTS’ have star quality to burn as they grace the Auckland Big Day Out stage for the first time.

Stay tuned for next announcement …

They're okay. I've got Absolution, and play it from time to time. Certainly not a band I'd travel for.

Does anyone know how much BDO tickets are roughly?

I'm dying to go this time, but it's gonna cost a lot to get there (especially for my school friend who wants to come with me...). So I'm just trying to figure out rough estimates for everything now...

Last time I went it was $90-odd.... but I know it's gone up since then, $100+
